Abstract

The object to be wrapped is deposited on thin aluminium foil which extends over the mouth of a forming device comprising an annulus and a plurality of resilient blades each fixed at one end to the annulus and converging at their other, free ends towards a first half mould having a hemispherical cavity coaxial with the annulus. A push rod is advanced axially of the preforming device to push the object and the aluminium foil between the resilient blades, making the foil adhere to the leading surface of the object and effecting a first moulding of the aluminium foil around the trailing surface of the object. The partially wrapped object is expelled from the forming device the blades of which close to effect a second moulding of the aluminium foil over the trailing surface of the object, forming a rear projection in the form of a tail constituted by that part of the aluminium foil which does not adhere to the object. The object expelled from the forming device is transferred into the cavity of the first half-mould, while a second half-mould is having a hemispherical cavity facing the first half-mould is displaced axially of the first half-mould through the forming device so as to squash the rear projection of aluminium foil against the object.

Claims (5)

1. Device for wrapping a spherical object provided with small protrusions distributed over its surface in a thin aluminium foil comprising a frame (10), a receiver (1, 11) held by the frame and having a partially spherical receiving surface, a forming device (3,13) consisting of a ring (4, 14), arranged coaxially of the receiver, from the edge of which ring a plurality of elastic lamellas (5, 15) extend towards one another, and comprising a plunger (9, 19) movable axially through the forming device, characterised in that the receiver (1, 11) has a hemispherical hollow chamber (2, 12) directed towards the plunger (9, 19), in that a stamp (7, 17) is arranged coaxially around the plunger (9, 19), the downwardly directed end of which stamp has a hollow portion (8, 18) which is hemispherical as seen from the plunger opening, and in that the plunger (9, 19) and the stamp (7, 17) are controlled in such manner that the latter at first lags behind the plunger (9, 19) upon depression thereof and after completed pushing-through of the object to be wrapped is lowered relative to the plunger (9, 19) by the forming device (3, 13) to an extent such that the stamp (7, 17) and the receiver (1, 11) come into contact and thus combine their hollow chambers to form a sphere into which the plunger (9,19) does not intrude.
2. Device according to claim 1, characterised in that the forming device (13) has first (15a) and second (15b) elastic lamellas arranged in alternative sequence longitudinally of the edge of the ring (14), the free ends (16a) of the first elastic lamellas (15a) coming in the rest position into opposed contact to the ring (14) in the axial position, whilst the second elastic lamellas (15b) cover the open gap between the first lamellas (15a).
3. Device according to claim 2, characterised in that the free ends (16a) of the first lamellas (15a) are each tapered at the end and in that the ends (16b) of the second lamellas (15b) each have a V shape directed towards the outer side of the forming device (13).
4. Device according to claims 2 or 3, characterised in that the tips of the outer free ends (16a, 16b) of the elastic lamellas (15a, 15b) extend relative to one another in a ray-like formation towards the exterior of the forming device (13).
5. Device according to claim 1, characterised in that it additionally comprises a transfer device (23) by which the stamp (17), which slides on the frame (10) between the forming device (13) and the receiver (11), passes through, and means (26) for bringing the transfer device (23) periodically into contact with the receiver (11) synchronously with the predetermined movement path of the stamp (17).
