Claims (7)

1. Lighting and re-lighting apparatus for a flare by means of a pyrotechnic cartridge, characterised in that each cartridge (22) is arranged within a casing (4) located in a firing position (37) situated at a distance (a) from the axis of the flare, and at a distance (b) beneath the orifice (3) thereof, this casing being provided with a cover (11) capable of being displaced from a closed position (A) in which the flares, within the casing (4), are situated in a sealed and thermally insulated recess (18), to an open position (B) in which each cartridge is directed towards a point (7) situated on the axis of the flare at a distance (c) of 1 to 10 m above the orifice (3) thereof, the distance (b) being greater than the distance (c) and the distances (a), (b) and (c) being such that (a)/[(b)+(c)] is between the values of the 45° tangent and the 20° tangent.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, for which each cartridge comprises a propulsion element and at least one propelled and combustible element known as the star, the combustion time of which is fixed so that this combustion takes place completely over a distance between 1.2 and 3 times the distance from the casing (4) to the point (7), on the axis of the flare.

Apparatus according to Claim 1, for which, in the closing position of the casing, the sealed and thermally insulated recess (18) in which are situated the cartridges is surrounded by a space (19) traversed by a cooling air current and, subsequently, by a continuous sheath (12) made of an insulating material.
4. Apparatus according to Claim 1, for which each cartridge (22) situated within a sealed and thermally insulated recess (18) within the casing (4) is located within a cylindrical case (23), the lower opening of which is closed bya stopper (25) which includes a passage (26) for a lighting means, and the upper opening of which is closed by a cap (27) which can be fractured by the effect of igniting the cartridge.
5. Apparatus according to Claim 1, for which the cover (11) of each casing (4) is capable of being displaced from a closed position to an open position by means of an articulated jack (14) located within the sealed and thermally insulated recess (18).
6. Apparatus according to Claim 1, for which the casings (4) are situated on a platform (5) accessible from the ground.
7. Apparatus according to Claim 1, for which the casings (4) are capable of being displaced between their firing positions (37) and a maintenance position (38) sufficiently removed from the flare orifice to be easily accessible with the aid of transfer means (39).
