Definitions
- the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of titanium and aluminum alloys. It also relates to a process for the preparation of alloys containing titanium, aluminum and at least one metal M taken from the group consisting of vanadium, molybdenum, zirconium, chromium, niobium, tantalum and iron .
- It relates more particularly to a process for preparing alloys based on titanium and aluminum by co-reduction in the presence of a flux-reactant.
- an amount of reducing metal is used, less than the stoichiometry, which leads to pure zirconium, that is to say free of reducing metal.
- the reduction reaction is initiated by high-frequency heating at a temperature between 600 ° C and 700 ° C, temperature at which the reaction products, aluminum fluoride, potassium fluoride and residual potassium fluozirconate, do not evaporate .
- the reaction mass is heated to a temperature above 1000 ° C., which leads to the evaporation of the reaction products as well as of the excess potassium fluozirconate.
- This process has the disadvantage of leading to a significant loss by evaporation of potassium fluozirconate.
- the separation of the reaction products is very difficult.
- the present invention makes it possible to prepare titanium and aluminum alloys or based on titanium and aluminum without loss of corresponding fluorinated derivatives.
- the present invention relates in fact to a process for the manufacture of titanium and aluminum alloys by reduction by aluminum of a mixture of alkaline fluotitanate in the presence of a flux-reactant taken from the group consisting of alkali oxides Na 2 0, KZO.
- the present invention also relates to a process for manufacturing an alloy of titanium, aluminum and at least one metal M taken from the group consisting of: vanadium, zirconium, chromium, niobium, tantalum, iron , by co-reduction with aluminum of a mixture of an alkaline fluotitanate and one or more halides of the metals M entering into the composition of the alloy in the presence of a flux-reactant taken from the group consisting of oxides alkaline Na 2 0 and K 2 0.
- the quantity of aluminum used corresponds to the sum of the quantity necessary for reduction or co-reduction and the quantity necessary corresponding to the composition of the alloy sought.
- the addition of the reagents and the proportion of flux-reagent is adjusted in such a way that the molecular ratio between the alkaline oxide used and the aluminum trifluoride formed during the reduction or co-reduction is greater than or equal to 2 and preferably between 2 and 3.
- the temperature of the reduction or co-reduction reaction is chosen so that the products constituting the reaction mass do not evaporate. In general, a temperature between 700 ° C and 1000 ° C is suitable. It is preferred to operate at a temperature between 750 ° C and 950 ° C and more particularly between 925 ° C and 950 ° C.
- the reaction is carried out in an inert atmosphere, preferably under argon at atmospheric pressure.
- the process of the present invention thus makes it possible, in a first step, to obtain a fine dispersion of the metals making up the desired alloy mixed with fluorinated derivatives.
- the separation is carried out between the metal part and the fluorinated derivatives after having carried out the solubilization of the latter in an aqueous solution.
- the solution of fluorinated derivatives obtained by this solubilization operation then contains an alkaline aluminate and an alkaline fluoride.
- this solution can be treated with a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid or hydrofluoric acid to give a combination of cryolite type which can be used as a flux in the manufacture of aluminum by electrolysis.
- the process according to the invention makes it possible, by a series of simple steps, to obtain alloys based on titanium and aluminum and leads to a by-product whose industrial recovery is very easy.
- Aluminum is preferably introduced in powder form.
- the fluotitanate used is preferably sodium fluotitanate in the anhydrous state, it is used in the finely divided state.
- the halide of the metal M is either a fluoride or an anhydrous chloride in the finely divided state, preferably a fluoride is used.
- alloys also containing molybdenum and / or tin, in addition to titanium, aluminum and optionally at least one metal M.
- molybdenum and / or the tin are introduced in metallic form.
- alloys further containing silicon it is also possible to manufacture alloys further containing silicon.
- the silicon is introduced in the form of silicon powder.
- the alkaline oxide used as flux-reactant is used in finely divided form, it preferably has the same cation as fluotitanate.
- Sodium oxide is preferably used.
- the reactants and the flux-reactant are introduced into a reactor, under an argon atmosphere, which is heated by high frequency.
- reaction mass is transferred under an argon atmosphere to a second reactor.
- the metal part after analysis and possible addition of metal powder to obtain the precise contents required for the alloys is then melted to give the desired alloy.
- the aqueous solution is treated with a solution of strong mineral acid, such as hydrofluoric acid or sulfuric acid, which precipitates a flux, a cryolite type which can be used after possibly adaptation of the respective contents of AlF 3 and NaF, to the aluminum electrolysis.
- a solution of strong mineral acid such as hydrofluoric acid or sulfuric acid
- the most commonly used fluxes being: sodium cryolite: AlF 3 , 3NaF; AlF 3 , 2.2NaF; and the chiolite: AlF 3 , 5/3 NaF.
- the present example describes the preparation of an alloy of titanium and aluminum with a composition by weight 95% of titanium and 5% of aluminum.
- a pressed mass containing: 82.37 g of sodium fluotitanate, 15.27 g of aluminum powder and 72 g of sodium oxide is introduced into a reactor for a first operation.
- the installation is designed in such a way that the reaction takes place under argon and at atmospheric pressure.
- This mass is then heated by high frequency.
- a graphite sleeve surrounds the reactor and makes it possible to reach the temperature of 950 ° C. which is controlled in such a way that it does not exceed this value. This temperature of 950 ° C is maintained for about twenty minutes.
- the entire reaction mass is then transferred under argon to a separate reactor and allowed to cool. Five identical successive operations are then carried out and the reaction masses collected in the separate reactor.
- an aqueous solution is collected containing soda, sodium aluminate and sodium fluoride, and a metal powder which is separated and dried. .
- the weight of this metallic powder is 98.8g including 94.2g of titanium and 4.6g of aluminum.
- the metal powder obtained can also be used for the manufacture of more complex alloys and in particular those containing tin, molybdenum, silicon, products added in powder form.
- the alkaline aqueous solution obtained moreover is neutralized with 560g of sulfuric acid, a cryolite-type precipitate is collected which contains 220g of A1F 3 and 160g of NaF , 800g of Na 2 SO 4 remains in solution.
- the precipitate can be used in the manufacture of cryolite, a product commonly used in the electrolysis of aluminum as a flux for alumina.

Abstract
