Abstract

The present invention applies to those auto-elevating marine platforms, as for deep-sea drilling and the like, outfitted with a number of legs and a number of associated jacking mechanisms of the rack and pinion type set with the rack's teeth in opposition, wherein a flexible coupling (5), the axis of compression of which is inclined, is placed between the support-framework (2), where the pinions (3) are mounted, and the main structure (1) of the platform in such a way that a relative freedom of movement between the support-framework (2) and the structure (1) is permitted. The intention is that the axis of compression of the flexible coupling (5) passes substantially directly through the instantaneous center of rotation of the upper part of the leg.

Description

The present invention relates to installations of so-called self-elevating marine platforms, in particular provided for carrying out drilling operations at sea, provided with a plurality of legs and with a plurality of associated lifting devices of the pinion and rack type making it possible to adjust the position and the holding in position of the platform on the legs.

No. 3,967,457 describes such a platform, in which each of the lifting devices comprises two groups of pinions driven in rotation by motor means, by means of gears fixed to a frame mounted on the platform , the pinions of the one and the other group respectively meshing with one of the teeth of a double rack having two opposite parallel teeth, integral with the corresponding leg. The frame can be fixed to the structure of the platform by elastic means.

These elastic means, which can be constituted, for example, by an assembly formed of metal plates such as steel, interposed with plates of an elastic material, have a high compressive strength and can be deformed axially and, in a certain measure transversely, consequently authorizing relative freedom of movement between the frame and the structure of the platform.

However, it results from the arrangement of these elastic means, that these work simultaneously in compression and in shear and that, on the other hand, they never work symmetrically, which determines inopportune parasitic forces.

The present invention aims to overcome these drawbacks and relates to a particular favorable arrangement of elastic means interposed between the frame and the structure of the platform.

Among the main advantages of this arrangement, one can cite its efficiency and the fact that the frame can follow the angular displacement of the leg without inducing any significant compression variation in the elastic means used, which results in that the forces applied to the pinions remain substantially constant.

The invention relates to a rack and pinion type lifting device designed to allow the position of a marine platform to be adjusted vertically and to maintain the latter in the desired position on a plurality of legs on each of which is rigidly fixed. at least one double rack with opposite teeth, to which is associated a lifting device comprising at least one pair of pinions connected to the structure of the platform, by means of a frame, each of the pinions respectively meshing with the one of the two teeth of the associated rack, so as to be located on either side of the rack, the pinions being driven in rotation by motor and reducing means, so as to determine in one direction or the other the required movements, the frame being fixed to the structure by elastic means allowing relative freedom of movement between the latter (known from US-A-3,967,457).

According to the invention, the elastic means are arranged obliquely so that the compression axes of these means pass substantially through the instantaneous center of rotation of the upper part of the leg.

The present invention will be better understood and other objects, advantages and characteristics thereof will appear more clearly on reading the description which follows, to which two sheets of drawings are appended as examples of embodiments.

Figures 1 and 2 show an elevator device connected to the structure of a platform by means of elastic means arranged in accordance with the invention according to two embodiments.

Referring now to the figures, reference 1 designates the structure of the platform. Reference 2 designates the frame carrying the drive members acting on the pinions 3 (two in number in the examples shown). The rotation of these pinions 3 controls the relative movements of the double rack 4 either in one direction, to determine the elevation of the platform above the surface of the sea when the feet secured to the rack are supported on the seabed, in the other direction so that the lifting of these feet allows the floating of the platform. According to the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the elastic means are arranged between an oblique sole 6 formed in a recess of a foot 7 secured to the frame 2 and a corresponding sole 8 projecting from the structure of the platform.

According to the embodiment shown in Figure 2, the elastic damping means 5 are arranged between an oblique sole 6 formed on the part 9 of the frame 2, extended laterally for this purpose and a corresponding sole 8 projecting from the structure of the platform . In the examples shown and in accordance with the invention, the compression axes of the elastic means 5 are inclined, the flanges 6 and 8 between which they are arranged also being inclined relative to the horizontal for this purpose.

These compression axes pass substantially through the instantaneous center of rotation of the upper part of the leg so that practically any variation in the compression force applied to these elastic means is eliminated and that only the shear force is applied to it . It follows from this arrangement that the load applied to the teeth of the pinions remains substantially constant whatever the relative movements carried out.

Obviously, any modification made by a person skilled in the art in the same spirit would not depart from the scope of the present invention as defined by the claims, in particular as regards the location, the inclination and the number of elastic means provided for each device elevator.
