Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a holder for a roll of a continuous material web of paper of the like of that type which is provided to be unwound from inside the roll through the upper end of the cavity of the roll, said holder being provided with support means for the support of the roll in an upright position , a pull-out opening, through which the material web is to be pulled out out of the holder, and tearing-off means for tearing off an unwound portion of the material web .
  • the present invention relates to a holder for a roll of a material web of the type , where the roll is stationary and the material web is unwound via one end of the core of the roll.
  • Holders of this type of the prior art are usually designed in the form of a substantially cylindrical container with a bottom opening for the extraction of material, said opening being located in coaxial arrangement in relation to the longitudinal axis of the enclosed roll.
  • the material web is extracted downwards in the direction of the longitudinal axis and is torn off against a toothed edge extending round the extracting opening.
  • an opening is provided in the container forming a throttling means for the material web .
  • said throttling means has to be made comparatively small, which brings in its train that the material web is extracted in a condition, in which it is wound up to a high degree, which makes it difficult for the user to handle . It may further be difficult to get hold of the torn-off end of the material web , which is inside the relatively narrow extracting opening, the hands thereby easily arriving in contact with the tearing-off edge, an experience, which may be felt as unpleasant and which also may lead to injuries .
  • Said object is obtained by means of a holder according to the present invention which is characterized therein that within the holder a re-linking means for the material web is positioned and above the re-linking means a slit shaped passage for the material web is positioned, that the re-linking edge extends substantially transversely to the longitudinal axis of said roll a distance above its top end and between said longitudinal axis and said pull-out opening and that the pull-out opening is positioned in any of the side portions of the holder and said tearing-off means are positioned at the pullout opening, the pulled out material web being able to be teared off against said tearing-off means .
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a holder according to the invention in a first embodiment
  • Fig. 2 is a partially broken view of the holder
  • Fig. 3 is a schematic cross sectional view through the holder illustrated in Fig. 1
  • Fig. 4 shows the holder according to Figs . 1 and 3 in a completely closed condition.
  • Figs . 5 and 6 show the holder in a second embodiment
  • Figs . 7 and 8 show the holder in a third embodiment.
  • the holder according to the invention in the example shown therein is designed as a box shaped container 1 with five solid components , viz the bottom component 2, two lateral components 3, 4, the back component 5 and top component 6, and a detachable front component 7.
  • the bottom component 2 forms the supporting means for a roll 8 of a material web 9 enclosed in the container 1 , which material web is arranged to be unwound from the roll and extracted out of the container in order to be used .
  • the material web by way of example comprises soft paper, which can be torn off in suitable portions in order to be used for cleaning, drying or similar.
  • the material web 9 can be made of any other type of material web such as synthetic woven or non-woven material, plastic films etc.
  • the roll 8 of the material web is of such a type that it can be unwound from the inside, i. e. from the core of the roll, said core thus not exhibiting any bobbin or similar of hard material but just a cylindrical cavity 37, through one end 10 of which the material web is thus extracted being unwound in a spiral by shaped condition.
  • the unwound portion of the material web has been illustrated quite schematically.
  • the front component is designed as a detachable unit constituting an integrated piece of sheet metal with a covering portion 11 substantially extending above the height of the roll 8 and with a portion 12 extending in. oblique direction inside the container, said portion 12 exhibiting an upper sharply beveled edge portion 13.
  • the oblique portion 12 is simply obtained by said piece of sheet metal being bent at the upper edge 14 of the covering portion 11 , the oblique portion 12 being designed in such a manner that it can yield in a springing manner, so that the edge portion 13 can be pressed in downwards direction from the top component of the container but can spring back towards the underside 15 of the top component, so that in a rest position it will be relatively close to said underside or possibly bearing against the same .
  • the front component 17 is fixed to the other portion of the container by means of two hook-shaped elements 16, which cooperate with two long flanges 17 (see also Fig. 2) , which extend along the upright front edge 18 of the two lateral components 2 reaching a level, which is located somewhat above the height of the roll.
  • a corresponding flange 19 is located along the lower front edge 20 of the container.
  • Said three flanges 17, 19 also form supporting surfaces for the covering portion 11 of the front component 7.
  • the two flanges exhibit an end edge 21 , on which the two hook-shaped elements 16 rest.
  • From the upper front edge 22 of the container extends longitudinally extending tearing-off means 23 in the form of a toothed edge against which the material web 9 can be torn off .
  • a slit shaped opening 24 is thus formed, which forms a place for the extraction of the material web .
  • the unwound portion of the material web 9 is thus intended to extend through this extraction place 24 and out through an outer opening 25 of the container 1 defined by the tearing-off means 24, the lateral components 3, 4 and the bent edge 14.
  • the extracting opening 24 is arranged in such a manner that by means of a light pressure the material web 9 is pressed against the underside 15 of the top component 6, as long as nobody is exercising a pull at the free end 26 of the material web .
  • the opening is, however, widened for a certain distance, so that the material web can pass in its spirally arranged condition .
  • this is brought about by the springing properties of the oblique portion 12 , as a downwards directed force can be applied to its free edge portion 13 , usually on account of the resistance existing in the roll against the unwinding operation .
  • the downwards directed force is also produced by the material web because of its thickness automatically regulating the opening, so that the material web can unobstructedly be unwound also at the end of the roll, when there is only a slight resistance against the unwinding operation.
  • the springing properties of the oblique portion 12 can simply be obtained by a suitable selection of the type of material and the thickness of the sheet metal plate forming part of the assembly, which material suitably can be a conventional iron or steelsheet or similar.
  • the springing action can take place over the whole height of the oblique portion 12 down to the hook-shaped elements 16.
  • the dimensioning is chosen to the effectthat the covering portion 11 of the front compohent 7 all the time bears against the three flanges 17, 19 without any additional hookshaped elements being required.
  • the material web with its free end remains suspended in the opening 25 of the container and is easily accessible for extraction at the next opportunity by introducing the hand through the wide opening 25, which permits the one can keep the hand at a safe distance from the toothed edge 23. Because of the fact, that the material web 9 is pinched by the edge portion 13, there is neither any risk that the free end 26 of the material web is blown in inside the container but is always easily accessible for a new extraction .
  • the holder according to Figs 1 and 2 is designed with a tight fitting front component 27, which is intended to substitute the front component. 7 according to Figs . 1 and 2 , said front component 27 being put in place, when the holder is in use .
  • the holder according to the invention is placed out-of-doors , by way of example at gasoline stations and similar places, it is a desired feature that the container can be closed and made inaccessible for theft of the contents of the container by an unwinding of the material web , when the gasoline station for example is closed. It is here the question of not only the initial cost of the material web but also of the necessity to impede that hundreds of metres of the material web is unwound and spread in the surroundings .
  • said front component 7 is substituted by the completely enclosing front component 27, which as to its design very much resembles the front component 7, but instead of the oblique portion 12 exhibits a portion , which closes the opening 25 of the container and with an upper edge portion 28 is placed against the outside of the toothed edge 23.
  • the front component 27 thus forms a sheet metal piece occupying a resting position on the outside and in the same manner as the front component 7 bears against the outside of the three flanges 17, 19.
  • the closing front component 27 exhibits a lock 29, which exhibits a cylinder 31 and a bolt 32 in locking position projecting in downwards direction from said cylinder, which is fixed to the lower edge portion 30 of said front component 27, said bolt 32 being arranged to grip round the flange 19 along the lower front edge 29 of the container.
  • the lock 29 is locked from the outside by means of a key that can be inserted into the cylinder 31, which is removed after the locking operation .
  • said bolt and flange 19 or the closing front component 27 must be provided with laterally projecting engagement means (not shown) , which prevent the front component from being lifted off in its loaded condition.
  • the container 1 will then be completely closed and its contents inaccessible, unless the container is not subjected to outright damage.
  • any more sophisticated measures against burglary are not necessary, as this closing of the container should be enough to avoid undue theft of a more spontaneous type.
  • the free end 6 of the material web is thus inside the container and is lifted up, when the closing front component 27 is again removed and the front component 7 for the utilization of the device is mounted.
  • a second embodiment of the holder according to the invention is shown.
  • the re-linking edge is designed as a rod or tube-shaped element 56, which is fixed to the back part 57 of the holder.
  • the pull-out opening 58 extends from the two opposite sides 59, 60 of the holder substantially along a curve by means of the rounded design of the holder. This enables a pulling-off and tearing-off of the material web 9 in a great number of directions over an angular interval going but from the longitudinal axis of the roll. This interval has a size in the order of up to 270° .
  • the back part of the holder is to a great extent open at least from a level and downwards from the top edge of the roll so, that a new roll can be placed in the holder from behind.
  • the holder is shown mounted to a wall 61 and is provided with a wall attachment 62 with releasable attachment means 63 and a pivot device 64.
  • the wall attachment 62 is provided to be attached to the wall 61 by means of bounding, screws or the like.
  • the holder is fixed to the bottom portion 65 of the attachment and is maintained in the shown position in a releasable manner by means of the attachment means 65. They consist in the shown example of releasable engagment means which hold the holder at a projecting edge 65.
  • the holder When the holder is to be folded downwards for the positioning of a new roll, the holder will be released from the attachment means by swinging them outwards .
  • They are suitably designed in a flexible and elastic material, such as plastics of a suitable type.
  • the holder can be folded down to substantially horizontal position and a new roll be positioned in a very simple manner.
  • the holder can in the shown example also be provided with a front portion, which is releasable so that it will be an opening in front, through which the new roll can be introduced .
  • the holder In the shown example the holder is provided with a closed top portion .
  • the material web is extracted from the container 1 substantially cross-wise to the longitudinal axis 36 of the roll 8 through a laterally faced opening 25 of the container.
  • the holder is further arranged in such a manner that according to the illustrated examples the material web 9 is not intended to be extracted out of the roll in downwards direction, but through the opposite end 10 of the hollow cylinder 37 of the roll 8 , i. e. its core, and in a lateral direction of pull relative to the longitudinal axis of the roll, whereafter the tearing off operations rather take place in a vertical plane than in a horizontal plane.
  • the extraction of the material web can moreover be very well controlled, and any unnecessary consumption of material does not arise at the end of the roll as a consequence of the reduced resistance to the unwinding operation .
  • the holder can be placed on a base, be suspended against a wall by way of example by means of openings in the back components 5 of the holder, which openings exhibit the form of keyholes turned upside down , through which pins, screws or similar can extend.
  • the bottom component 2 of the container can further exhibit a number of drainage holes in order to let out possibly penetrating water.
  • the container is, however, very well closed and very well protected against penetrating water and dirt because of the oblique portion of the front component, which is located inside of the opening 25 of the container.
  • the slit shaped opening is made between the upper edge of the oblique sheet plate 41 and a separate springingly yielding element 42.
  • the springingly yielding element 42 is in the illustrated example designed as a helical spring, by way of example a tension spring, which with both its ends 43, 44 is hookedup round the lateral edges 45 of the oblique sheet-plate 41.
  • the paper web 46 is intended to extend between the springingly yielding element 42 and the upper end portion 40 of the oblique sheet-plate, which edge portion 40 also in this case is steeply rounded.
  • the springingly yielding element can be designed in such a manner that it tends to bear against the upper edge portion , but to be so easily springingly yielding that a slit is formed by the paper web exhibiting a width determined by the thickness of the portion of the paper, which is extracted through the slit. It is not necessary that the oblique sheet-plate 41 is springingly yielding in this case, but it is of advantage, if it springingly yields a little in order to facilitate the extraction of the paper web 46.
  • the advantage of such a solution according to the third embodiment is the fact that the distance between the upper end 40 of the oblique sheet-plate and the upper portion 47 of the container is not of a critical nature, but can, if so required because of some circumstance, be given larger dimension than what is the case in the other embodiments .
  • the distance between the upper end 40 of the oblique sheet-plate and the upper portion 47 of the container is not of a critical nature, but can, if so required because of some circumstance, be given larger dimension than what is the case in the other embodiments .
  • an especially good hold of the torn-off paper web is obtained by means of the separately arranged springingly yielding element 42.
  • the oblique sheetplate 41 can be designed forming an integrated unit with the front component 49 and permit being hooked off and hooked on against edges of flanges 53 , 54, 55 by means of hooking means 50 in the same way as in earlier embodiments .
  • the springingly yielding element comprises some flexible element, which is arranged to extend over an edge, which by way of example is not springingly yielding relative to the flexible element.
  • This edge can comprise a sheet-metal edge, which is suitably rounded off .
  • the extracting place comprises two flexible elements, which extend on both sides of the slit and are arranged to spring against each other in order to hold the paper web after its having been torn off, but to permit the paper web to be pulled through the slit.
  • the springingly yielding element 42 needs not be attached to the upper edge 40 of the oblique plate, but can be attached to the end walls 51, 52 of the container.
  • the sheet plate 41 in itself does not need to be oblique, as the upper edge 40 can be the upper edge of the front component and the slit can thus be located right inside the tearing off edge 48. As a matter of fact this edge must be located outside of the extracting place, where the torn off paper web is held .
  • one edge of the slit yields relative to the other edge of the slit, and follows in the springing movements of the other edge relative to the roll and the other portions of the container.
  • the flexible portion of the slit can also be formed by the edge of a flexible wall of rubber, plastics or similar, which tends to widen the slit in connection with an outwards pull, but to reduce the slit, if the paper tends to be pulled inwards .
  • a helical spring is used, this can possibly be provided with an envelope of plastics or similar.
  • the tearing off edges can be arranged in such a manner that the opening 25 along its circumference is provided with tearing off edges or such ones at least at the lateral edges of the opening, i. e . along the edge portion 18.
  • the holder is not designed as a closed container, but only comprises a stand, which exhibits an extracting place and a tearing-off edge, by means of which arrangement the principal function is obtained by means of a completely different design with respect to its construction .
