Abstract

A box-shaped article to be printed arrives on a conveyor belt and is stopped by a sluice-gate and, after said article has been released, it arrives on a conveyor slide in order to be brought onto a lifting platform. After the article has been raised to the level of the printing stations, all four sides of the article are printed simultaneously, the screen-printing method being used in particular. The apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a conveyor belt, a sluice-gate, a conveyor slide and a lifting platform. The lifting platform serves to raise the box to the level of the printing stations which are arranged so as to print all four sides of the box simultaneously. The box is aligned relative to the printing stations by means of a positioning mechanism and securely clamped.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for printing box-shaped objects with vertically arranged printing stencils, in which the object is transported along a transport plane to the printing station and to an apparatus for carrying out the method. In particular, the printing of plastic bottle crates by means of the screen printing process is considered.

From DE-A-2 754 916 a screen printing machine for the automatic printing of objects with a rectangular cross section is known, the vertical screen printing method being used in all stations. With this machine, it is possible to print all sides with different motifs using several printing stencils mounted next to each other, the printed matter being turned during transport from the printing station to the printing station. Apart from the necessity to use a relatively complex turning and positioning mechanism, the juxtaposition of the printing stations requires a relatively large space and, on the other hand, the time required for printing on four or even more pages is relatively large.

From DE-A-2 207371 a screen printing machine and a method for printing on both sides of square containers is also known, the turning of the printed matter being eliminated. This machine and the described method can only be used for simultaneous printing on two sides. Simultaneous printing of more, for example four pages, would also result in the printed matter being turned over here.

In contrast, it is an object of the present invention to provide a method and apparatus for printing box-shaped objects which allow faster simultaneous printing of more than two pages, take up less space and facilitate precise positioning. A method and a device that achieve this object are described in the claims.

In Figur 2 erkennt man ferner das Steuerpult 9.A device according to the invention is shown purely schematically in FIG. 1, details which are not essential for the invention being omitted. The conveyor table 1, the frame 2 with the printing devices having printing stencils, the lifting platform 4, the lock 5 and the transport slide 6 can be seen. A conveyor belt 7 with drive and deflection rollers 8 is arranged in the conveyor table 1. The control panel 9 can also be seen in FIG. 2.

In Figure 3, the lock 5 is shown in section and on an enlarged scale. The lock has the task of holding the continuously arriving containers and delivering them in a certain cycle. One can see the conveyor belt 7 running from left to right in this drawing with two containers 10 placed thereon, indicated by dash-dotted lines, for example a box for plastic bottles. The lock has a yoke 11 which is transverse to the conveyor belt and to which two guides are fastened, one of which is designed as a spindle 12. The spindle 12 is fastened to the upper part of the yoke by means of a holder 13 and can be driven by means of a crank 14 or by means of a motor. An upper block 15 is arranged on the spindle 12 and the guide (not shown), these blocks being guided in the yoke struts in a manner not shown. The two upper blocks 15 are connected by an axis 16, to which two holding rods 17 are fastened, which, viewed in the conveying direction, point obliquely to the rear. On the spindle 12 there is a lower block 18 to which a pneumatic cylinder 19 is fastened, the tappet of which is connected to the axis 16 via a joint 20. In the rest position, the plunger is extended and the support rods attached to the axis 16 point obliquely to the rear and abut the inside of the rear wall of the container 10 and thereby prevent its further transport. In response to a corresponding control command, the plunger of the pneumatic cylinder is pulled down, as a result of which the axis 16 is rotated and the two holding rods are pivoted upwards. As a result, since the conveyor belt 7 is constantly in motion, the container 10 is transported further to the right and arrives on the transport carriage 6. At the same time, a further container is pushed under the holding rods and, after the pneumatic cylinder has extended the plunger, stopped it.

From the lock, the container arrives on the transport carriage 6, which, again purely schematically, is shown in FIG. The transport carriage rests on the carriers 21 of the conveyor table 1, the guides of the carriage not being shown for the sake of simplicity. The transport carriage has a base frame 22, which consists of two longitudinal beams 23 and 24, which are seen in the conveying direction are connected at the rear by a web 25. A pneumatic cylinder 26 engages on this web 25 in order to move the transport carriage in the longitudinal direction. The base frame runs on guide rods, not shown. Clamping jaws 27 and 28 are arranged on the longitudinal beams, which are angled at the front so as to form a stop 29 or 30 for the containers and are opened obliquely outwards at the rear in order to facilitate the retraction of the containers. Each jaw is connected via a scissor joint 31 or 32 to a holder 33 or 34, which in turn is connected to the longitudinal beams. The jaws are actuated by one or more pneumatic cylinders 35 attached to the brackets. The pneumatic cylinders 35 have a relatively small stroke, since they essentially only serve to clamp the containers 10. The distance between the two brackets 33 and 34 or between the clamping jaws can be adjusted by means of a mechanism, not shown, for example a spindle with a hand crank, in order to adapt it to the dimensions of the containers. The pneumatic cylinders 35 are controlled via a switch 36 which is attached to a stop 29 on the outside.

If the lifting platform 37 has lowered again after the printing process, the pneumatic cylinder 26 receives a control command and, with the clamping jaws closed, it pushes the transport carriage with the container onto the lifting platform, the container being pushed down on this platform, for example onto another conveyor belt to get. If the transport carriage with the container is in the correct position on the lifting platform, the switch 36 is actuated and thereby the pneumatic cylinders 35 in order to open the clamping jaws and to release the container. The container is then raised to the level of the printing station by means of the lifting platform, as a result of which the pneumatic cylinder 26 receives the control command to pull back the transport carriage. At the same time, the container retained by the lock is released and passes through the conveyor belt 7 between the. open jaws, which are closed again in the position shown to hold the container in the center. As indicated in FIG. 1, the table 37 of the lifting platform 4 is actuated by means of a pressure cylinder 38.

In the screen printing process, especially if several colors are used, it is essential to position the object to be printed precisely. In principle, different positioning methods are possible with the present machine. For example, the container can already be held and aligned when the lift is lowered or it can only be positioned when it is raised. FIG. 5 shows schematically a positioning device which, when the box 10 is lifted, engages in its corners and aligns it with respect to the four printing templates. The positioning device 39 is suspended from two guide rods 40. On a shoulder of a rod there is a block 42 which, on the one hand, slides on two rods 43, which are fastened to a plate 44, and on which, on the other hand, four joints 45 are articulated, each joint pointing towards a corner of the plate 44. A piston rod 46 is articulated on each joint 45, on which a head 47 is slidably arranged. The head 47 has a downward-pointing pin 48 provided with a blunt tip, which is guided through a diagonally running slot in the plate 44 and is intended to engage in the corners of the box 10.

In the rest position of the positioning device, the centering pins 48 are in the innermost position. When the box 10 is raised by the table 37, the plate 44 is raised, the pins 48 engaging in the corners of the box 10. First, the plate 44 rests on the box and when the plate 44 is raised further, the block 42 presses the pins against the corners of the box. As a result, the box is centered on the one hand and held in the centered position on the other hand. It is also possible for the entire positioning device to move downward, center the box and clamp it and lift it to the height of the printing templates, which would eliminate the lifting platform.

Man erkennt ferner die Farbzuführung 63 und den Sammelbehälter 64.FIGS. 6 and 7 show one of the four printing devices 3 in detail. These are four printing devices arranged symmetrically on the frame 2 for the screen printing process. 6 shows the frame 2, the lifting platform 4 with the lifting table 37, on which there is a box 10 which is to be printed. The box 10 is held by means of a positioning device 49, this positioning device deviating from that described above. In principle, however, the box is held and centered by means of pins. As can also be seen from FIG. 1, this entire positioning device is centered by means of two spindles 50 with a handwheel 51 and adapted to the different box sizes. The printing station 3 is pivotally attached to a strut of the frame by means of a hinge 52 and can be locked to the other strut of the frame by means of a locking device 53. This swiveling out and also easy removal of the individual printing devices enables on the one hand easy access to this printing device and thus easy maintenance and adjustment, and on the other hand allows quick conversion of the printing devices. The printing device has a holding frame 54 on which a further frame 55 is arranged, the second frame 55 being displaceable in height relative to the holding frame by means of adjusting screws or the like. In the frame 55, two struts 56 are arranged which are displaceable in the transverse direction and which have holes 57 which accommodate the Screen printing frame 58 of the screen 59 serve. As a result, the sieve can first be roughly adjusted by means of the holes 57 and then finely adjusted by means of the adjusting device on the holding frame 54 and on the frame 55, while the alignment in the transverse direction can be carried out using an adjusting device (not shown). The doctor blade 60 is aligned in height by means of an adjusting screw 61 and is actuated by a pressure cylinder 62 which is attached to the holding frame 54. The ink supply 63 and the collecting container 64 can also be seen.

All movements are controlled from the control panel 9. The container first arrives at the lock 5, is released there and is pushed onto the transport carriage 6 by the conveyor belt. The transport carriage 6 transports the container onto the lifting platform 4 and at the same time the container located there onto another conveyor belt. When the container is lifted, it is brought into a position which is precisely determined in relation to the pressure devices and held there by means of a positioning device. This is followed by simultaneous printing on all four sides of the container and a lowering of the container after the printing process has ended. After the lifting platform has been lowered, the container located on it is pushed away by the next one and reaches, for example, a next conveyor belt in order to be subsequently dried, which can be done, for example, in a drying oven. A rapid printing sequence can be achieved by printing on all sides at the same time, and by positioning them precisely, it is possible to carry out multi-color printing by interconnecting several printing devices. Since the printing stations are independent of one another, it is possible to carry out a different printing on each side without having to change over the printing station and without having to turn the container. The device does not have to contain four printing devices, it can also be fewer or more.
