Definitions

  • the present invention relates to microwave couplers with waveguides.
  • the prior art uses waveguides provided with one or more steps.
  • Microwave couplers using this type of stepped waveguide are according to the prior art, made from two waveguides with two steps, parallel to each other and having a wall comprising a common step to these two waveguides. Holes of determined diameter are then made in the common wall so as to establish coupling. The number of these holes and their diameter depends on the desired coupling rate as well as the impedance matching conditions which are imposed by the system.
  • the present invention aims to remedy this drawback by defining a microwave coupler with two waveguides, each using at least one step, and whose coupling characteristics are at least equal to the coupler of the hole type of the prior art but whose size is very small.
  • the microwave coupler with two parallel waveguides and having a common wall is characterized in that this common wall is pierced with slots parallel to a cross section of these two waveguides.
  • microwave couplers with small waveguides these are produced using conventional waveguides with rectangular section without steps, and are known by the Anglo-Saxon name "branch line” and are described for example in American patent US-A-2,558 385.
  • the coupling, in this type of coupler is ensured by sections of waveguides mounted orthogonally to the two waveguides whose coupling is desired.
  • Their major drawback is a limitation of the frequency bandwidth, precisely because of the use of these sections of waveguides without steps as coupling elements.
  • the figure shows a preferred embodiment of a microwave coupler according to the invention, suitable for waveguides with two steps. It comprises the coupler proper, consisting of two waveguides 2 and 5 to a step 10 and 15, and a conductive plate 7 pierced with slots 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, this plate serving as a common wall without steps to the two waveguides 2 and 5 to a step.
  • the coupler proper consisting of two waveguides 2 and 5 to a step 10 and 15, and a conductive plate 7 pierced with slots 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, this plate serving as a common wall without steps to the two waveguides 2 and 5 to a step.
  • two transitions 4 and 6 are connected making it possible to pass from a wave guide with two steps 12 to a wave guide with a single step 5.
  • the waveguide 2 to a step 10 is connected on the one hand to an ohmic termination 1 and on the other hand to a transition 3 of the coaxial line waveguide type 11; this ohmic termination and this coaxial line waveguide transition are both well known to those skilled in the art.
  • the ohmic termination can be constituted by a waveguide section with a step 8 in which a dielectric material absorbing microwave waves 9 is placed.
  • This dielectric material 9 can be cut into a wedge shape with a width equal to that of the step 8, so that it is in contact with this step 8 and the wall of the waveguide at the end of the ohmic termination 1, as shown in the figure.
  • the metal plate 7 ensuring the coupling must be such that its thickness and the interval between two consecutive slits are close to ⁇ go / 4, where J go is the guided wavelength corresponding to the center of the desired frequency band.
  • These slots of different width are also arranged symmetrically with respect to the center of the plate 7.
  • microwave coupler described above is only one example of an embodiment suitable for waveguides with two steps.
  • the ohmic terminations and the waveguide-coaxial line coupler can be replaced by other types of terminations adapted to the operation of the device in which the microwave coupler is mounted.
  • the waveguides used have a particular structure, and in particular when the section of these waveguides comprises more than two steps, it is necessary to adapt the shape of the sections of waveguides 2 and 5 as well as the transitions 4 and 6 so as not to have, in the part of the microwave coupler corresponding to the conductive plate 7, steps in contact with this conductive plate 7 pierced with slots. For this, it may be necessary to reduce and then eliminate certain steps in the transitions 4 and 6 respectively and in the waveguide sections 2 and 5, as is the case for the step 30 in the particular example of the figure.
