Abstract

A device for conducting away exhaust gases from internal combustion engines comprises at least one sleeve-shaped silencer which encloses an exhaust pipe and forms an enclosed space around said exhaust pipe. The silencer is made up of at least two sleeve-shaped parts, or of a sleeve-shaped part and base part, which are joined together. The portion of the exhaust pipe in the space inside the silencer features perforations and/or sound absorbing elements. The inside of the silencer may be fitted with sound absorbers. The sleeve-shaped parts of the silencer and, if desired, the exhaust pipe and/or the sound absorbers are made of aluminum and/or an aluminum alloy. The sleeve-shaped parts of the silencer are manufactured by impact extrusion, deep drawing or a similar method and are joined together preferably radial to their longitudinal axis. The ends these parts taper down to tube-shaped extensions which fit over the exhaust pipe. To join the sleeve-shaped parts and the tube-shaped extensions to the exhaust pipe a region is provided on which an interlocking profile is created by electromagnetic forces.

Description

The invention relates to a device for discharging the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines with at least one sleeve-like muffler comprising an exhaust pipe and forming an interior from at least two interconnected parts, the exhaust pipe possibly having perforations in the interior of the muffler and, if appropriate, sound absorbers being arranged.

Exhaust systems are known for most types of internal combustion engines and are available on the market in a large number of shapes and configurations.

They usually consist of steel, sheet steel or chrome steel sheet and in some cases are provided with a corrosion-protective surface coating.

Despite corrosion protection, the service life of these known exhaust systems remains inadequate because, on the one hand, the steel used is susceptible to corrosion, the weight of the system is increased significantly and thus brings about problems with vibration breakage; on the other hand, the exhaust systems are usually provided with some weld seams during assembly, which are particularly prone to breakage and cracking. This vulnerability primarily affects the usually welded connection between the muffler and the exhaust pipe, since this is where the negative effects of the vibration are greatest.

Improvements to the steel with regard to these disadvantages, be it through the addition of an alloy substance or a coating, however, make the production considerably more expensive, while the advantages achieved are small.

The inventor has set itself the goal of developing a device of the type mentioned at the outset which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, is light in weight, shows little susceptibility to corrosion and reduces the number of susceptible weld seams.

This object is achieved in that the sleeve parts of the muffler and possibly the exhaust pipe and / or the sound absorbers consist of aluminum and / or an aluminum alloy.

On the one hand, this design has the advantage that the durability of the device is significantly improved by the high corrosion resistance of the aluminum. On the other hand, the lower mass of aluminum compared to the previously used manufacturing materials causes a significant reduction in the problems of vibration fracture.

Aluminum and its alloys are also particularly easy to deform, so that they can also be manufactured inexpensively. The exhaust pipe is preferably produced by means of extrusion, the sound absorbers by means of cold extrusion or deep drawing or the like.

But the inventive idea also includes that the Ab - gas pipe and / or optionally of the sound absorbers made of steel or chromium steel with the coating and is used only for the production of the sleeve parts of the silencer aluminum.

The sleeve parts consist of preferably extruded hollow bodies with cylindrical or Egyptian shapes, deep-drawing or a grain also being used as the production process combination of deep drawing and ironing techniques comes into question. The sleeve parts are positively and / or non-positively connected to one another. This connection is preferably made radially to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve parts, since the seam is as short as possible and the vibrations can be better absorbed.

It is advantageously provided that the sleeve parts are provided at the end with seamless tapering approaches which can be produced both during extrusion and during deep drawing. A sleeve, which surrounds the exhaust pipe, is seamlessly molded onto each of these tapering approaches. This avoids the frequent breaking point between the muffler and the exhaust pipe, which usually consists of a weld seam in the known exhaust systems, and also increases the adhesion of the two parts to one another.

To connect the sleeve parts, a coupling area is preferably formed, in which one sleeve part has a ring edge radially offset on an annular shoulder, against which the edge area of the other sleeve part rests on the inside or outside. The ring shoulder serves as a slide-in limitation.

Instead of the two sleeve parts mentioned, only one sleeve part and one base part can be used. The parts can be manufactured and connected in the manner mentioned.

It has been found to be particularly advantageous for the connection of the two sleeve parts to one another, for the connection of the sleeve parts or the muffler to the exhaust pipe and / or for the connection of the sound absorbers to the exhaust pipe or the sleeve parts, the use of the so-called Magneform process. In this process, electrical energy is stored in a charger and fed to a tool, which can generate a magnetic field with magnetic forces of up to 50,000 PSI for a period of approx. 10 - 20 microseconds and deform electrically conductive metal.

The profiling and thus the connection of the two sleeve parts by means of the Magneform process is carried out either by placing a workpiece with the desired profile on the inner surface of the muffler or by pre-profiling the inserted sleeve part. In both cases, the existing profile is transferred to the non-profiled part (s) by applying the Magneform tool.

But it is also envisaged to glue or weld the sleeve parts or to connect them by forming folds or tongue and groove.

The use of the Magneform process also allows an easy and inexpensive connection of the sleeves and the exhaust pipe, with an adhesive optionally being introduced between the two to produce an airtight seal.

The sleeve parts 2, 3 can have a cylindrical or oval cross section Q, the wall 6 of the sleeve part 2 having a shoulder-like shoulder 9 at one end, through which the opening cross section Q of the sleeve part 2 is increased by approximately the size of a wall thickness and a coupling area B is formed. The sleeve part 3 is inserted into this coupling area B.

At the end of the sleeve parts 2 and 3 which is distant from the coupling area B, the opening cross section Q is reduced by tapering shoulders 16, which are followed by sleeves 10, on the inner wall 11 of which part of the tube wall 5 of the tube 4 abuts.

In the case of a coupling area B1, the wall 7 of the sleeve part 3 is pre-profiled, while the wall 6 of the sleeve part 2 adjusts to this profile or is adjusted by means of magnetic deformation.

In a further exemplary embodiment, the connection of the two sleeve parts 2 and 3 is produced in a coupling area B 2 by welding or gluing.
