Abstract

A power adjustment for a piston-type powder actuated fastener driving tool wherein a tube is slidably disposed in the barrel of the tool, the tube containing the driving piston of the tool. The tube has a radially inwardly extending flange at its breech end which engages a radially outwardly extending surface on the piston. Means for moving the tube axially of the barrel are provided so that the distance between the flange and firing chamber can be varied whereby the gas expansion chamber between the firing chamber and the rear face of the piston can be varied thereby varying the power with which the piston is driven.

Claims (4)

1. Fastener driving tool, comprising a barrel holder (10), a breech (12) integral with the barrel holder (10), a barrel (14) slidingly mounted within the breech (12), a driving piston (4) slidingly mounted within the barrel (14), and a muzzle-bushing (40), the rearward end (46) of the muzzle-bushing (40) being in contact with the forward end (48) of the barrel, tool characterized in that it comprises a power adjustment ring (32) adapted for being screwed onto the muzzle-bushing (40) and the barrel holder (10), the ring (32) and the forward portion of the barrel (14) being adapted to cooperate so that the rotation, in one direction, of the ring (32) causes the barrel (14) to slide forwards, whereas the rotation, in the other direction, of the ring, causes the barrel (14) to slide backwards under the action of the muzzle-bushing (40), the sliding of the barrel (14) adjusting the volume of the gas expansion chamber behind the driving piston (4).
2. Tool according to claim 1, characterized in that the forward portion of the barrel (14) comprises a collar (28) engaging a collar (30) provided at the backward portion of the ring (32).
3. Tool according to one of claims 1 and 2, characterized in that the wall of the breech portion in which the barrel (14) is slidingly mounted comprises vent means (96).
4. Tool according to one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the barrel (14) is fixed in rotation and comprises a slot (20) through which a tang (22) of a pawl (24) for returning the driving piston (4) can extend.
