Claims (10)

1. A device for adjusting and retaining two ends of rails (12, 14) to be connected by welding, of the type incorporating two rail retaining clamps (42, 44), characterised in that it has a rigid structure which is formed by two support plates (18, 20) which are aligned and connected to each other by a curved part (16) and which is capable of being arranged horizontally in such a way that of the two support plates one is applied to one vertical side (30) of the head of one of the rails and the other to the corresponding vertical side (36) of the head of the other rail, the curved part creating an access zone around the ends (38, 40), each support plate being provided with a retaining clamp (42, 44) equipped with a jaw (46, 58) capable of coming to rest on the opposite vertical side of the head of the rail, each of the two plates being provided with two spaced supports (26, 28: 32, 34) in such a way as to form four spaced supports which constitute a reference line for the alignment of the rails.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1, characterised in that each retaining clamp (42, 44) is located at a substantially equal distance between the two supports (26, 28: 32, 34) of the corresponding support plate.

A device as claimed in one of Claims 1 and 2, characterised in that each support plate (18, 20) is provided with an anchoring block (72, 74) adapted to receive a clamp (76) for adjusting the alignment of the rail flanges, provided with a jaw (86) capable of being supported on the end of the rail flange, the vertical slant which is conveniently modified in order for the two rail flanges to be aligned.
4. A mobile trolley (104) equipped with at least one adjusting device (10) as claimed in one of Claims 1 to 3.
5. A trolley as claimed in Claim 4, characterised in that it consists of a trolley with two wheels having two supports (106, 108) adapted to receive the horizontally disposed adjusting device (10) so that it is removable.
6. A trolley as claimed in Claim 4, characterised in that it consists of a self-propelling trolley (118) of the lorry type which can move on the track and has at least one adjusting device (126, 128) carried by an articulated arm (130,132).
7. A trolley as claimed in Claim 6, characterised in that it constitutes a means (120) for transporting the material intended for welding the rails.
8. A fixed installation for the assembly of rails by welding, characterised in that it incorporates a frame (156) equipped with an adjusting device (168) as claimed in Claim 1.
9. An installation as claimed in Claim 8, characterised in that the adjusting device (168) is mounted so as to pivot about a horizontal axis (174) of the frame (156) parallel to the direction of alignment of the support plates.
10. An installation as claimed in one of Claims 8 and 9, characterised in that the frame (156) is provided with two anchoring blocks adapted to receive a clamp for adjusting the alignment of the rail flanges, provided with a jaw capable of being supported on the end of the rail flange, the vertical slant of which is conveniently modified in order for the two rail flanges to be aligned.
