Abstract

An electrolyser consisting of a stack of elemental cells, the said stack being located in a horizontal tubular enclosure. The enclosure consists of a fixed vertical baseplate (2) and of a tubular envelope (1) mounted upon the horizontal bed (8) of the apparatus by way of supporting rollers (7). The body of the stack (4) is supported during the opening operation by chocks (12) and by supporting rollers. The invention is made use of for the production of hydrogen and oxygen by means of industrial electrolyzers.

Description

The present invention relates to an electrolyser constituted by a stack of cells surrounded by a horizontal tubular enclosure.

Electrolysers, such as those intended for the industrial production of hydrogen and oxygen by electolysis of water, consist of a stack of a very large number of elementary cells, said stack being placed in a tubular enclosure, generally pressurized and cylindrical.

Electrolysers are known, such as that described in French patent 2,394,620, which comprise a horizontal tubular enclosure made of concrete, therefore fixed in position. In order to carry out the maintenance of the cells, it is necessary to dismantle all the pipes and engineering accessories forming the environment of the cell stack, then to extract the said stack from its concrete enclosure. Such an operation is extremely long and therefore very detrimental to the performance of the installation.

It therefore seems much more advantageous to use, as is for example the case of the electrolyzer described in German patent 396.221, a tubular enclosure comprising a vertical fixed base on which the open end of a closed tube at its other end, and to make this closed tube removable by horizontal translation, for example using rails as is the case, in a completely different field of technology, for Kelly filters (cf. " Chemical Engineers Handbook-Mac Grawe Hill-5th edition-page 19-70 ").

The present invention relates to an electrolyzer whose enclosure can be quickly and easily dismantled, in order to allow the maintenance of its cells with the minimum loss of time. An electrolyser according to the invention consists of a stack of elementary electrolysis cells, said stack being surrounded by an enclosure intended to be pressurized comprising a vertical fixed base to which the base of the stack is fixed and a removable horizontal tubular body. completely surrounding said stack and mounted on a first horizontal rolling device, and it is characterized in that said stack rests on said tubular body by means of a second horizontal rolling device and in that said first rolling device is arranged on a horizontal fixed base so as to fully discover the stack when opening the enclosure.

The present invention also relates to a method of dismantling an electrolyser of this type, characterized in that it consists in removing said tubular body by horizontal translation and in placing, as and when said removal, support wedges under the body of the stack of electrolytic cells left bare by said removal.

  • la figure 1 représente schématiquement un électrolyseur conforme à l'invention, son enceinte tubulaire étant en position de fermeture;
  • figure 2 représente schématiquement l'électrolyseur de la figure 1, avec son enceinte tubulaire en cours d'ouverture;
The invention will be better understood with the aid of the following description of an exemplary embodiment, with reference to the appended drawings in which:
  • Figure 1 schematically shows an electrolyser according to the invention, its tubular enclosure being in the closed position;
  • FIG. 2 schematically represents the electrolyser of FIG. 1, with its tubular enclosure being opened;
  • FIG. 3 is a schematic axial section of the electrolyser of the invention along the line AA ′ in FIG. 1.

The base plate 2 of the electrolyser is vertical and is permanently fixed to a horizontal base 8 constituting the chassis of the device. Furthermore, the stack 4 is surrounded by a horizontal and removable cylindrical body 1 coming, in the closed position as shown in FIG. 1, to abut against the base plate 2, the assembly (1, 2) constituting the enclosure of the electrolyser. The stack 4 rests on two rolling ramps 5, themselves resting on the lower part of the casing 1 by means of rolling rollers 6 and lateral guide rollers 11. Furthermore, the cylindrical casing 1 itself rests, by feet 15, on the horizontal base 8 by means of support rollers 7 carried by the feet 15, and lateral guide rollers 13 also carried by the feet 15.

As can be seen in FIG. 1, the casing 1 is attached, by a fastening 16 to a horizontal cable 9 placed in the hollow of the base 8, and surrounding itself around a driving pulley 10 and a pulley of reference 17, so as to be able to exert on the casing 1 a horizontal pull to the right or to the left allowing respectively the opening and the closing of the enclosure of the electrolyser, as will be shown with reference to FIG. 2 .

La figure 2 montre l'opération d'ouverture de l'enceinte par dégagement latéral de l'enveloppe tubulaire 1.FIG. 2 shows the operation of opening the enclosure by lateral release of the tubular envelope 1.

For this operation, the driving pulley 10 is driven in a clockwise direction, which pulls the tubular part 1 to the right. The envelope 1 then moves while rolling by means of the rollers 7 on the base 8, the part of the stack 4 remaining inside the envelope 1 being supported by means of the rollers 6. Furthermore, in accordance with the invention, place, as and when the enclosure of the electrolyser is opened, support wedges 12 under the visible part of the stack 4 as shown in the drawing.

The positioning of the shims 12 as the enclosure is opened can be either manual or automatic: for example, the shims 12 can be parallelepipedal shims lying down when the envelope 1 covers them on the base 8 , and rising, by a conventional spring release device, when said cylindrical envelope 1 no longer covers them.
