Description
The invention relates to a liquid-cooled holder for the tip of an electrode of an arc melting furnace according to the preamble of
Liquid-cooled holders of this type, which form the upper part of an arc electrode with an edible or non-edible electrode tip, have become known, for example, from DE-OS 1 565 207. In order to protect the metallic cooling system of this holder against the radiant and convective heat of the arc and against the gases in the arc melting furnace, a tubular heat screen made of very heat-resistant material, such as ceramic, surrounding the cooling system is provided. To improve the mechanical strength of the ceramic covering, it can be provided with a wire insert. When using the electrode in an arc melting furnace, in which, for example, scrap is melted, it can happen that the refractory protective layer around the conduit system of the holder is damaged when the electrode is retracted or due to collapsed scrap during operation. Arc flashovers occur between the liquid system that conducts the electrical current of the arc electrode and the metallic insert of the electric arc furnace. In this case, the pipe system for the coolant will also be damaged very quickly, which could result in water leaks in the arc furnace and explosions. Of this, an electrode with a wire insert in the ceramic heat shield is somewhat better protected than one without a wire insert, but here too, damage is not ruled out, which leads to the consequences mentioned.
The aim of the invention is a liquid-cooled holder of the type mentioned in the introduction for an electrode tip which, with a surprisingly simple structure, not only ensures the desired thermal shielding of the metallic cooling system from the furnace atmosphere, but also better mechanical protection.
This goal is achieved by the characterizing features of
The invention is based on the knowledge that a heat shield made of a metal tube, which is electrically insulated from the current-carrying cooling system, can be adequately cooled via a refractory substance present between the cooling system and the metal tube while maintaining the required electrical insulation, ie at a temperature below the Softening point, especially at temperatures below 600 ° C, can be kept. This means that a steel jacket can be used as a heat shield, i.e. a very simple structural element that offers excellent mechanical protection.

The liquid-cooled
The
Between the
For economic reasons, a soft carbon steel can be used as the material for the
Kühlsystem 3a.Like the described first exemplary embodiment, the second exemplary embodiment, namely the liquid-cooled
To force the cooling liquid, a welded or cast
Below the
The
