Abstract

A protective layer 10 of a tough metal is applied by a galvanic process during the embedding of hard metal grains H, and the said protective layer is coated by a galvanic process with a layer 11 of a harder metal having a layer thickness D1, which corresponds approximately to the grain size of the hard metal grains. A basic nickel bath with silicon carbide hard metal grains H suspended therein and an acid chromium bath are used. The ink transfer roller 1 rotates at a surface speed in the nickel bath in such a way as to run through at least one stop interval R between depressions V in the surface of an ink transfer roller during the time it takes for the ions to move a distance corresponding to the grain size. <IMAGE>
