Description
DEVICE FOR POSITIONING AND FIXING A BALLISTIC PROTECTION MEMBER AND STRUCTURE EQUIPPED WITH SUCH A DEVICE
The technical field of the invention is that of positioning and fixing devices for offset ballistic protections for a structure, such as a military vehicle or a fixed shelter.
To protect the military vehicles against the attacks of projectiles, it is known to offset the protection members with respect to the outer walls of the vehicle by means of supports. Patent US2009266227 describes a protection type formed by a net that is arranged at a distance from the walls of the vehicle by fixed arms having an end integral with the wall.
Thus, the protection member performs its protective function at a distance from the vehicle, which allows not to propagate to the walls of the vehicle the destructive effects suffered by the protection member. This offset of the protection member is particularly necessary when employing grids for protecting against the attacks of hollow-charge rockets. Indeed, the projectile must penetrate to a certain level through the grid to be damaged and for its ignition device to be neutralized.
Other protection members of the structures, such as nets or plates, are also known. A major drawback of such devices resides in the bulk they represent, changing in particular the original size of the vehicle. Therefore, to cross certain passages, it may be necessary to remove the overprotection or else to resort to a device as described in WO200964263 where the overprotection grids are lifted and pressed against the side walls of the vehicle.
However, this solution only partially solves the bulk problem since the size in height of the vehicle is even more penalized.
This solution does not facilitate either the access to the interior of the structure or of the vehicle once the protection device is implemented.
From patent application WO2011/142784 is known a device for deploying protection grids which comprises folding arms located between a w^all of the vehicle and a protection member. These arms comprise a large number of sections which are connected to each other by hinges. These arms are interposed between the wall of the vehicle and the protection member and they penalize the size of the vehicle even in their folded position.
Patent US2011/0303817 provides a device comprising resilient arms for maintaining the ballistic protection members at a distance from a vehicle. However, this device does not allow to reduce the side bulk of the protections but it only allows to prevent their damaging following a shock.
Finally, from patent US3137205 is known a device for fixing ballistic protection members comprising a rail integral with the side walls of a vehicle and on which rolls integral with the protection member circulate. However, this device ensures a protection of the front portion of the vehicle and not of the side walls.
The invention provides a device for positioning and fixing ballistic protections which allows to solve the bulk problem of the offset ballistic protections.
According to a particular embodiment, the provided positioning and fixing device allows to facilitate access to the vehicle despite the presence of the overprotection members.
Thus, the invention relates to a device for positioning and fixing at least one ballistic protection member onto a structure, such as a vehicle, the device comprising at least one spar, which can be made integral with the structure, and receiving a telescopic arm, a support means being integral with the end of the one or more arms, the protection member being attached to the support means by a connecting means, in order to protect a side wall, the arms and spars being designed to be fixed to the structure at the roof thereof, the device being characterized by the fact that the support means comprises a horizontal portion which is located above the ballistic protection member, the connecting means for connecting to the support means comprising at least one swivel hinge allowing, by rotation of the protection member, an access to the wall.
The arms and spars are designed to be fixed to the structure at an upper portion thereof.
Advantageously, the horizontal portion is extended at at least one of its ends by a vertical portion onto which at least one protection member may be fixed.
Advantageously, the device comprises at least one lock for maintaining the telescopic arm in the deployed or retracted position.
According to a feature of the invention, the device comprises at least one retaining means comprising at least one rod comprising at a first one of its ends a swivel joint which can be made integral with a wall of the structure, the rod comprising at a second end a means for securing with at least one protection member.
According to a feature of the invention, the device comprises at least one interface rail onto which the swivel joints are fixed, the rail being designed to be made integral with a wall of the structure.
The invention also relates to a structure, such as a vehicle, which is equipped with at least one ballistic protection member which is itself fixed by such a positioning and fixing device.
The structure according to the invention retains a reasonable size while being provided with a ballistic protection which can be quickly positioned.
Thus, the invention relates to a structure, such as a vehicle, which comprises a roof and two side walls which are protected using at least one ballistic protection member which is fixed to the structure by a positioning and fixing device comprising at least one spar, which can be made integral with the structure, and receiving a telescopic arm, a support means being integral with the end of the one or more arms, the protection member being attached to the support means by a connecting means, the arms and spars being designed to be fixed to the structure at the roof thereof.
According to a feature of the invention, the structure carries a support means at each side wall, each support means comprising a horizontal portion extending over substantially the entire length of the roof of the structure .
Advantageously, each spar fixed to the roof of the structure receives two telescopic arms, each arm carrying a support means located at a different side wall.
Advantageously, the structure carries an interface rail fixed at each side wall, the rail extending over substantially the entire length of the wall and onto which the swivel joints are fixed.
The invention will be better understood upon reading the following description, description illustrated by the appended drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows an overview of the device in the deployed position around a vehicle.
Figure 2 shows an overview of the device in the retracted position around a vehicle.
Figure 3 shows a detailed view of the device in the deployed position.
Figure 4 shows a detailed view of the device at the retaining means.
Figure 5 shows a detailed view of the device in the retracted position.
According to Figure 1, a structure that is herein a vehicle 100 is protected by anti-rocket ballistic protection vertical grids 101 arranged on the periphery of the vehicle 100.
The grids shown herein are formed of bars parallel to each other. These grids are known in the armor field under the Anglo-Saxon name « slat armors ».
The grids 101 are maintained at a distance Dl from the outer side walls 102 of the vehicle 100 by means of a positioning and fixing device 1 according to the invention. The positioning and fixing device 1 is integrally fixed to the vehicle 100 at fixing studs 2 arranged in superstructure, on the roof 100a of the vehicle 100.
Each stud 2 is integral with at least one spar 3 arranged transversely to the main travel direction of the vehicle 100 in the shown embodiment, i.e. perpendicular to the side walls 102. According to the embodiment of Figure 1, each end of each of the spars 3 is located at the vertical or recessed from the outer walls 102 of the vehicle 100. For each spar 3 is provided at least one arm 4 having a cross-section profile that corresponds to the inner section of the spar 3.
The arm 4 may slide in the spar 3 so as to be telescopic. The arm being able to slide between two end positions, called deployed position and retracted position, detailed later.
As can be seen in the figures, the roof 100a of the vehicle carries four spars 3. Each spar receives two sliding arms. Thus, the same set of spars allows to carry the grids protecting the two side walls of the vehicle.
For each arm 4, its end facing towards the outside of the vehicle 100 comprises a support means 5 for hanging the protection grids 101. According to the embodiment of Figure 1, the support means 5 comprises a tubular horizontal portion 5 placed above the ballistic protection members 101 and extending over almost the entire length of the vehicle. The front end of the horizontal portion 5 comprises a vertical portion 5b extending towards the ground. The horizontal portion 5 comprises hinges 5a securing each one of the grids 101 to the support means 5 and thereby forming a connecting means 5a. Herein, there are two hinges 5a per grid 101.
Most of the protection grids 101 are thus suspended from the horizontal portion of the support means 5 which is located above the grids and therefore does not penalize the side bulk of the device and does not hinder the protection grids.
For the grids arranged in the vicinity of the vertical portions 5b of the support means 5, as the grid 101a placed towards the front of the vehicle 100, the hinges 5a laterally secure the grid to the vertical portion 5b.
Other conventional means for achieving a pivot link 5a are conceivable. This pivot link 5a has the function of allowing access to the walls of the vehicle 100 by a simple pivoting of the grid 101 operating a rotation thereof about the support means 5, as shown in Figure 3.
The grid integral with the vertical portion 5b of the support will be able to pivot by rotation about this vertical portion, thereby allowing an access to front side doors of the vehicle (not shown).
It can be noted in Figures 1 to 3 that the spar 3 located at the rearmost of the vehicle also carries grids which protect the rear face of the vehicle. These grids are arranged at a fixed distance from the rear wall.
It can be noted in Figure 3 that the lower portion of the outer walls 102 of the vehicle comprises retaining means 6.
According to Figure 4, each retaining means 6 comprises a pair of rods 6a and 6b integral by their first end with at least one grid 101, or two when securing is done at adjoining grids 101. This securing is preferably done by means of a quick-fit fixing means 6c, which herein comprises a plate 6d against which the grid abuts and a profiled abutment 6e capping the bars of the grid and which is screwed onto the support plate 6d. As can be seen in Figure 4, there is a single support plate 6d at the first end of the lower rod 6b and a profiled abutment 6e for each grid. The support plate arranged at the first end of the upper rod 6a is designed to cooperate with a single profiled abutment (not shown) capping the two adjoining grids .
Each of the second ends of the rods 6a,6b comprises a joint 103 each pivoting about a horizontal axis 102b parallel to the wall 102 of the vehicle. This joint 103 is integral with a rail 110 acting as an interface part 110 with pre-existing bosses on the wall 102 of the vehicle (bosses and wall not shown). These bosses usually serve to fix accessories on the exterior of the vehicle 100.
This retaining means 6 has the function of avoiding the oscillations and swings of the grid 101 about the support means 5 when the device 1 is deployed. It will be noted that in the deployed position, the device 1 places the grids 101 substantially parallel to the walls 102 of the vehicle 100 and at a distance D1 between 0.25 and 0.90 meter from the outer wall 102 of the vehicle 100.
According to Figure 2, the device 1 is shown in the retracted position. In this position, each arm 4 is telescopically pushed in the spar 3 with which it corresponds. The telescopic assembly obtained by the correspondence between the outer section of the arms and the inner section of the spars 3 allows to press the grids 101 against the outer walls 102 of the vehicle 100, or at least to place them in the vicinity of the walls 102 at a distance D2 between 0 and 0.1 meter. Thus, the size of the vehicle 100 is only very slightly impacted by the addition of protection grids 101. Meanwhile, the retaining means 6 are pivoted and pressed along the walls 102 of the vehicle 100 so as not to prevent the grids 101 from getting closer to the vehicle 100.
Maintaining the arms 4 in the deployed or retracted position with respect to the spars 3 is ensured by a lock 8 (visible in Figure 5) comprising a pin 8b passing through the spar 3 and the arm 4 at a bore (not visible) in the deployed position and a further bore 8a of the arm in the retracted position. The transverse displacement of the arm 4 in the spar 3 is thus blocked.
The device according to the invention may be implemented to fix ballistic protections to a fixed structure, e.g. a command shelter or a field hospital. The device and the structure equipped according to the invention allow an easy and quick deployment and foldback of the protection means, with an impact on the size that is reduced. This is particularly interesting for the vehicles.
Since the device is fixed at the roof of the structure, it has a side bulk reduced to the minimum. Since the support means are arranged above the ballistic protection members, they do not reduce the effectiveness of the latter.
It is of course possible to implement the invention with ballistic protection means of different structures, e.g. nets, armor plates, resilient grids or gratings...
