Abstract

An apparatus has a rotating mass divided into two rotating bodies 104, 110 being able to rotate as a unit around an axis in order to develop a compensating torque. The rotating bodies are eccentrically mounted relative to the rotational axis in such a way that their angular position relative to each other may be varied from a first position where the joint centre of gravity M1+2 of the rotating bodies is located near the rotational axis 7, to a second position where the joint centre of gravity is located at a greater distance from the rotational axis. At start of the apparatus, and during at least part of the first revolution of the rotating mass, the rotating bodies are adjusted so that the joint centre of gravity is located near the rotational axis, giving the apparatus an advantageous small starting torque. When the rotating mass is rotating at an appropriate speed, the rotating bodies 104, 110 are rotated relative to each other such that their joint centre of gravity M1+2 is located at a distance from the rotational axis being matched to the desired magnitude of the compensating torque. <IMAGE>
