Description

Stapler
The invention relates to a stapler comprising a lower part that is usually formed as a base and an upper past that is usually pivotally fastened to the rear end of trie lower part. A magazine for staples is generally located on the upper part. By depressing the front, free end of the upper part onto the lower pail, in each ease a staple can be pushed Into material, for example a stack of paper, that is lying on the lower part, in order to staple said material For thicker stacks of paper or stronger paper, it can be difficult to apply the necessary stapling force by applying direct pressure on the upper part.
Staplers have therefore already been developed in which the stapling force is not applied by direct pressure on the upper part, but rather indirectly via a lever. US-PS 7,140.528, Japanese utility mode! 2084404, US-OS 2002/0005427 A1 and the publication of the International application WO 03/082528 Å1 disclose devices of this kind, for example. US 1,782,743 further describes an actuating device in which staplers, hole punches or the like can be clamped in order to actuate these in a boosted manner by hand via a lever, by foot pedal or in a power-assisted manner. The assembly is complicated and very large, in addition, German utility model SI 08 427 U1 or the German publication of the European patent document DE 694 12 89012, for example, disclose stapling pliers which also have a lever, by means of which applying the required stapling force >s simplified. Finally, US-P5 2.858JI97 discloses a stapling device which can be actuated both as a stationary stapler apd as stapling pliers, in one case, the stapling force is applied by direct pressure on the upper part and in the other case by pressing together the two rear ends. However, the required stapling force is approximately equal in the two cases and the possible Insertion depth for the paper' to be stapled is small, as is also the case for other stapling pliers.
Therefore, the staplers from the prior art have the problem that they require a lot of space owing to the lever and/or. such as in the case of the stapling piiars, only allow a very small paper insertion depth.
The problem addressed by the invention is therefore that of producing a stapling device that is small, can be used with low effort and has as large a paper insertion depth as possible, This problem is solved according to the invention by a stapler having the features of claim 1,
By arranging the lever such that it can be deactivated for a basic operating mode without Increasing the leverage and such that it can be placed on the upper part, the stapler can be made the size of conventional staplers that do not have mechanical advantage. In this position, which is described in the following as the basic mode or basic position, the stagier can be used for small stacks of paper and small amounts of material without using the lever, like a conventional stapler that does not have a force transmission means. By contrast, in the fever mode, which staples by applying pressure on the lever using force amplification, the Sever protrudes from the upper part of the stapler and thus also facilitates the stapling of heavy materials using a low actuating force, since a large distance is bridged by the lever and the gearing. When the stapler is not being used it can be brought into the basic position in which the lever is placed thereon and thus does not occupy any more space than staplers without force amplification.
Further advantages and details can be found in the: dependent claims· and in an embodiment shown in the drawings, which is described in more detail in the following, in the drawings:
Fig. 1 to 4 show the stapler in different positions, in each case in a perspective view obliquely from the front and in a side view;
Fig, § is, for illustration, a partially sectional side view of the stapler, without the coyer eiemenh in the Sever mode before the stapling process has begun,
Fig. δ shows the subject matter from Fig. 5 In the lever mode at the end of the stapling process.
Fig. 7 shows the subject matter from Fig. δ in the basic mode at the beginning of the stapiing.process, and
Fig. 8 shows the subject matter from Fig. 7 in the basic mode at the end of the stapling process.
Fig. 1 shows the stapler comprising its lower part 1, which is preferably but not necessarily designed as a base, an upper part 2 which, in the embodiment shown, is fastened to the rear end so as to be pivotally movable:, and a lever 3 that is connected to the free end of the upper part 2, which lever projects upwards from the upper part 2 in the lever mode such that an angle is formed between the upper past 2 and lever 3. Fig. 2 also shows the stapler in the lever mode at the end of a stapling process, the upper part 2 having been depressed onto the lower part 1. by means of the lever 3. In this case, the angle between the upper part 2 and the lever 3 has also reduced.
Fig. 3 and 4 show the stapler In the basic mode, i.e. when the lever 3 is inactive and is therefore: placed on the upper part 2, Fla, 3 shows the point in time before a stapling process has begun. This is also the position in which the stapler can he stowed or stored in a compact manner. By applying pressure on the front end E of the lever 3, which end is connected to the upper part 2, the upper part 2 is then, proceeding from the position in Fig. 3, depressed onto the lower part 1 into the position shown in Fig. 4, as a result of which small amounts of paper can be stapled -without· using the lever 3. An operating button 4 can be seen In ail the drawings on the upper side of the lever 3, which button serves to switch between the fever mode corresponding to Fig. 1 and 2 and the basic erode corresponding to Fig. 3 and 4.
The precise function' of the stapler Is explained in more detail with reference to Fig. 6 to 8; in which, for reasons of simplification, the cover element and housing part of the stapler that can be seen in Fig. 1 to 4 ere not shown or are shown in a partial sectional view. Fig. 5 and 6 correspond to the positions In Fig. 1 and 2, whereas Fig. 7 and 8 correspond to the positions In Fig. 3 and 4.
For the stapler in the embodiment, the lever 3 is pivotally connected to the upper pah 2 about a pivot pin 21. The upper part 2 is in turn pivotally hinged on the lower pad 1 about a stapler pin 8. In this case, the stapler pin 8 is located at the rear end of the stapler, in order to free an insertion region 7 at the front for the material (not shown), in contrast, the pivot pin 21 is arranged at the free end E of the upper pad 2 and is therefore spaced as far as possible from the stapler pin 6. In the lever mode shown In Fig. 5 and 6, the lever 3, upper part 2 and lower part 1 therefore form an assembly in a zigzag pattern. The lever 3 is actuated by applying pressure to the outer end A thereof, as a result of which the opposite free end E of the upper part 2 is depressed onto the lower part 1 in order to initiate the stapling process. For this purpose, the lever 3 has a pressure element 8 which acts on the upper part 2 in the lever mode in Fig. 5 and 6. in order to allow the lever 3 to be as long as possible, while at the same time allowing the insertion depth for the material to be as large as possible, the stapler has a gearing. Said gearing preferably has a drive element 11 which Is operatively connected to the lever 3, in this case via the pressure element 8, arid an output element 13 which Is operatively connected to the lower part 1. Said operative connection is mechanically simple yet secure and can be implemented by interlocking which can be direct or indirect (as shown). When there is a ''gear change", i.e. lever engagement end Å opposite the free end E of the upper part 2, at least one transmission eiement 12 Is required between the drive-element 11 and the output element 13, The embodiment shown therefore has a triaxial gearing: having the pivot pin 21 for the drive element 11, a pivot pin 22 for the transmission eiement 12 and a pivot pin 23 for the output eiement 13. in order to make different transmission ratios possible during the stapling process, the stapler preferably has a curved guide which, in the embodiment shown, can advantageously be a component of the gearing, in the embodiment, the curved guide Is achieved by a curved contour 33 of the output element" the course of movement during the stapling process, along a guide reiser 15 attached to the iower part 1, Owing to the curved contour 33 that has an Initially steeper flank and a subsequent less steep curve, when the lever 3 is continuously depressed, the free end E of the upper part 2 is significantly lowered at the beginning, provided that no force is yet required to drive in the staple, whereas, during the further course of the downwards movement of the lever 3, a large action of force occurs on the upper part 2 while the downwards movement is still small. Consequently, the force to be applied during the entire stapling process, in particular for large amounts of paper, is kept as constant as possible and thus low overall. in order to transfer the stapler from the lever mode shown in Fig. 5 and 6 into the basic .mode shown in Fig. 7 and 8, in the embodiment shown the operating button 4 must be operated.
For this purpose, the operating button 4 is moved forwards in the direction of the arrow 41 and thus at the same time also moves at ieast one attachment element, specifically in this case a looking element-17, and the pressure element 8 forwards In the direction 41, li the lever 3 is now simultaneously lowered, said lever car? be piueeo on the upper pan 2 in parallel with the upper part 2. In this case, the locking element 17, which is preferably hook-shaped, as shown, engages automatically in an opening 0 In the upper: part 2 and fixes the lever on the upper part 2 in the basic position shown In Fig. 7 and 8. The pressure element 8. which is also simultaneously moved forwards in the direction 41, now no longer presses on the drive element 11 as shown In Fig. 5 and β, but rattier is brought into a position in which is does not have any effect on the upper part 2, in the embodiment shown, this is achieved by the pressure element 8 dipping into a recess 31 of the drive element 11. in the basic mode corresponding to Fig. 7 and 8, the stapler can now also be used for stapling without leverage, by the upper part 2 being depressed at its free end E in the direction of the arrow P. like for conventional stapiers. if the stapler is to: be transferred from the basic mode of Fig. 7 and 8 into the Sever mode of Fig. 5 and 8 having leverage, in the embodiment shown the operating button 4 has to be moved forwards again in the direction 4', In order to unhook the looking element 17 from the opening D. At the same time, the outer lever end A must be raised in the direction of the arrow F. as a result of which the pressure element 8, which is spring loaded for this.purpose* changes again into its active position having an operative connection to the drive elsm^ht 11, corresponding to Fig. 5 and 8. In this case, a pin 5 In the upper part 2 functions as an upper stop for the lever 3. in the embodiment shown, the operating button 4 and the locking element 17 are also spring loaded against the direction 41 and therefore the operating button 4 and the locking element 17 move automatically back into their rear position ag|in after a movement in the direction 41 when the operating button 4 is released.
The stapler, which is merely shown as an embodiment but does not restrict the overall inventive concept in any way, Is designed such that the lever mode and the basic mode are the same. Each user can therefore leave the operating mode he predominantly prefers in place in an alternative embodiment (not shown), the stapler has a preferred operating mode (which can either be the basic mode or the lever mode} into which the device automatically reverts after a stapling process. For this purpose, one of the vital attachment elements (pressure element 8 or locking element 17) must be held in the temporarily selected operating mode by a latch or a similar means for the duration of a stapling process.
However, the stapling process Itself then unfastens the latch, for example, such that the device automatically reverts Into the preferred operating mode after this single stapling process, if stapling is to be carried out in the other, non -preferred operating mode, this has to be initiated by actuating an operating button before each individual stapling process: for example.
The stapler according to the invention achieves ail the requirements owing to its sophisticated design and is mechanically stable and in particular compact. It can be folded in a compact manner (basic mode), used like a conventional stapler without force amplification (basic mode) or also used to staple large amounts of paper or very strong material without effort by a force amplification by means of the lever arm (lever mode). When a gearing is used, a longer lever arm and thus a smaller force required for the stapling process can be achieved at the same time as a large Insertion depth for the material.
