Abstract

The invention relates to a method of producing an adsorbent, in which a granular expanded mineral and calcium sulphate hemihydrate are mixed together to form a granulated material, and the calcium sulphate hemihydrate is converted into calcium sulphate dihydrate by the addition of a surplus of water, and where the free water is removed by drying. It is desirable that the proportion of expanded mineral be reduced, the adsorption effect be approximately maintained, and the hardness of the adsorbent be increased without any additives. This is accomplished by mixing calcium sulphate hemihydrate and expanded mineral in such quantities that a weight ratio of calcium sulphate : expanded mineral greater than 5:1 and up to 10:1 exists in the adsorbent by mixing being effected by calcium sulphate hemihydrate and expanded mineral being poured together into a container and mixed together by means of a stirring tool to form a granulated mixture, by the granulated mixture, after addition of water and before drying, being left for at least 4 minutes, and by the dry calcium sulphate dihydrate being converted, by calcining at 120-150 degree C, into calcium sulphate hemihydrate in such a proportion that the adsorbent has a total water content of 1% by weight to 16% by weight. The adsorbent produced in this manner comprises, on the one hand, open-pore smaller particles which consist only of calcium sulphate and, on the other hand, open-pore larger particles in which an expanded mineral core is coated with calcium sulphate.
