Den i fig. 1-4 viste støjskærm er opbygget som en selvbærende konstruktion. Kassetten monteres i eller på stolper, eksempelvis med H-profil, der er forankret i jorden, og hvorimellem de i hovedsagen vandret forløbende skærmelementer er monteret. Kassetten består af profilerede metalplader 4, der eksempelvis er tyndvæggede, samt en opfyldt kerne 9 af et lydabsorberende granulatmateriale. Støjskærmen 10 kan som vist også omfatte forskellige profilplader, korrugerede trapez-plader som danner en mekanisk barriere og forside på skærmen 10. Fælles for alle pladerne der monteres på fronten er, at de er perforerede i en eller anden grad og udstrækning. Det vil være yderst enkelt at sørge for potentialudligning af alle metaldele i en støjskærm af den beskrevne type, således at den også bliver velegnet til brug langs med jernbaner med elektrisk drevne tog.
