Abstract
Dilute molasses solutions are generally acidified with the aid of sulphuric acid and then employed as nutrient medium for fermentations. However, used nutrient solutions lead on anaerobic methanisation, because of the sulphate content, to biogas containing hydrogen sulphide. It is now possible to acidify molasses solutions to an adequate extent with the aid of ion exchangers. These molasses solutions are comparable with customary molasses solutions in fermentations, and they produce an improved biogas in the methanisation. Preparation of acidified molasses solutions and their use in fermentation processes.
