DEUTSCHES PATENTAMTGERMAN PATENT OFFICE
Werkstoffhandbuch Nichteisenmetalle, 1936, Blatt K 3·).The previously known 'high-percentage' magnesium alloys contain - with a few exceptions intended for special purposes - as alloy formers essentially aluminum and zinc, the aluminum content between about 4 and 10% and the zinc content up to about 3%, with increasing Decreasing aluminum content. These known cast magnesium alloys have a tensile strength of 16 to 22 kg / mm 2 with an elongation of 3 to 12% and a yield point of 8 to 16 kg / mm 2 (see Material Handbook for Non-Ferrous Metals, 1936, sheet K 3).
A disadvantage of these known alloys, however, can be seen in the fact that they solidify tend to form so-called »micro-cavities«. There are fine hairline cracks under "micro-cavities." understood in the structure that not only a leakage of the cast against one-sided pressure from liquid or gaseous media, but also due to their notch effect Good strength properties that can be achieved with a healthy structure, especially on highly stressed Places with a corresponding accumulation of material, may significantly affect them. Attempts have been made so far to prevent the occurrence of micro-cavities by making more extensive use of so-called shock plates and other measures for the rapid cooling of the endangered To counteract structural areas; However, such measures are expensive to use and also technically difficult to master, and the success is often only partial.

Die Legierungen sind dadurch gekennzeichnet1, daßThe invention relates to magnesium alloys which, thanks to their composition, not only reach the previously known cast magnesium alloys in terms of mechanical strength, but in some cases even exceed them considerably, but at the same time the tendency of the known cast magnesium alloys! for the formation of micro-cavities, or only to a much lesser extent. The alloys are characterized 1 that
They use the element cerium in amounts of at least ο, ι% and not more than about 2% and zinc in amounts of at least 0.5% and not more than 12%, but preferably not more than 8%.
In addition to these metals such alloy-forming may be present in the alloys, which are also soluble in the presence of the two above-mentioned Hauptlegierungsbildner- 1 in the designated amounts of magnesium in the solid state, that is, mixed crystals form. These are in particular cadmium, tin and silver, The. The amount of these further alloy formers can according to the invention be up to 10%, but preferably not more than 4%. However, it has been found] that the presence of aluminum, at least in amounts greater than about 1%, the. The favorable properties of the Mg-Ce-Zn-based alloys according to the invention are considerably impaired, so that the alloys according to the invention should not contain aluminum as the intended alloy component.
Dagegen hat der normale Eisengehalt (etwa 0,05%) des Magnesiums, den man bei den bisher bekannten Magnesiumlegierungen als unerwünscht hoch ansah und daherThe presence of even the smallest amounts of silicon also has an adverse effect on the properties of alloys from; the presence of antimony is also harmful. On the other hand, the normal one has Iron content (about 0.05%) of the magnesium that is found in the previously known magnesium alloys regarded as undesirably high and therefore
durch Anwendung besonderer Verfahren zu verringern trachtete, bei den vorliegenden Legierungen nicht nur keine ungünstige Wirkung, sondern scheint sogar die Eigenschaften der Legierungen zu verbessern.attempted to reduce this by using special processes in the case of the present alloys not only does not have an adverse effect, but even seems to affect the properties of the alloys to improve.
For the purpose of improving their corrosion resistance the alloys according to the invention with the usual amount of manganese added from 0.3 to 0.8 ° / o provided: ■ ■
It has also been found that the alloys according to the invention experience a very considerable further improvement in their mechanical strength properties through appropriate heat treatment. The heat treatment consists in annealing the alloys at the highest possible temperatures, ie as close as possible below the solidus point, for several hours and, after rapid cooling, for example in air, tempering them for a long time at temperatures of 120 to 250 °. For an alloy with 0.75% cerium and 4% zinc, for example, annealing at 515 0 for 5 hours and tempering at 175 0 for! 20 hours proved to be useful. Under certain circumstances, it is also possible to dispense with homogenizing annealing and limit the heat treatment to tempering, although the improvement in the mechanical properties described is generally much less.
A number of alloys are discussed below according to the invention, for example, and their mechanical strength properties communicated. For comparison, the corresponding values of two alloys (No. 1 and 2 in the table) of which the first only 0.3 per cent manganese and the second only 0.3 per cent manganese and Contains 0.5 per cent. Zinc, both of which are therefore free of cerium.
From these figures it can be seen that the best strength properties are obtained with the lower cerium additions to be achieved; an increase in cerium content within that drawn by the invention However, borders cause an even more complete suppression of the formation of »micro-

It is therefore up to you to either work towards a structure with particularly good strength properties or else towards a structure free of micro-voids by appropriately dimensioning the cerium additive, the choice between the two essentially depending on the intended purpose of the castings.
To Dk alloys according to the invention are not only suitable for the production of castings, but also show good properties in the kneaded state.
