KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
Fischer & Hepp, Ann. 262, S. 238, sowie Patentschrift Nr. 62179).Benzolazo-a-naphtylamine is made by heating with aniline and a-naphthylamine, as is known, into a water-insoluble naphthindulin of blue Color transferred (see Fischer & Hepp, Ann. 262, p. 238, as well as patent specification no. 62179).
On the other hand, through the French additional patent No. 230692 of May 14, 1895 it became known that benzene-azo-Ct 1 -naphthylamine-βj-monosulfonic acid when heated with aniline (or its homologues) gives a water-insoluble red azine derivative which, after conversion into a Polysulfonic acid gives a product which stains wool in an acid bath.
When fusing Benzolazo-cij-naphthylamine-ßj-monosulfonic acid with aniline and a-naphthylamine, a water-soluble red dye is now obtained. The course of the reaction and the result achieved is therefore quite different from the methods just mentioned. Above all, it must be regarded as unexpected that the one after the new The resulting non-sulfurized dye is water-soluble, in contrast to the above first mentioned Product; this fact is all the more striking than in general Fusions with a-naphthylamine lead to poorly soluble products. It is It is also surprising that the readily soluble dye used in our process has a red shade has, while the aforementioned also using a-naphthylamine produced product has a blue color.
The new procedure also differs from that of Fischer & Hepp (Ann. 272,
The water-soluble products which in this way, 'and not as main, but as secondary products, can now with the dye of the present invention, the formation temperature of which is about 100 °, therefore not be identical, because the latter body is under the influence of aniline undergoes a transformation at 150 ° to 180 °; it passes over into a derivative which can no longer be diazotized, while the at Water-bath temperature product of our process is diazotizable and an indigo blue colored diazo compound provides.
Lecco (Ber. VII, p. 1290) also obtained another dye from the action of hydrochloric acid p-toluidine on amidoazonaphthalene at 170 to 180 °. The same dye can be prepared according to patent no. 40858 by heating α χ α 2 -naphthylenediamine with certain amines and amidoazo bodies and is known under the name Magdalaroth. This dye is also produced at a considerably higher melting temperature, and only in an extremely low yield; it is rather sparingly soluble in water, while our dye is easily soluble in water and even forms an easily soluble zinc double salt. The aqueous solution of our dye shows a clear fluorescence, while the Lecco dye does not show this property.
Das neue Verfahren zeichnet sich durch seinen glatten Verlauf aus, und es ist* besonders bemerkenswerth, dafs die Reaction bei erheblichThe new procedure is characterized by its smooth course, and it is * particularly noteworthy that the reaction is considerable

Auf tannirter Baumwolle erzeugt der Farbstoff bläulichrothe Töne von bemerkenswerther Lichtechtheit.10 kg benzolazo-ctj - naphtylamine-ßj- monosulfonic acid, 4 kg of hydrochloric acid ά-naphthylamine and 20 kg of aniline are heated on the water bath. At about 95 ° a reaction, accompanied by a considerable increase in temperature, begins, while with the evolution of sulphurous acid, the melt at the same time turns bluish-red in color. The mixture is now heated to 100 ° for about 1 hour. The melt can be worked up in the way that after making it alkaline, the aniline is first blown off with steam; dissolve the remaining color base then in boiling alcohol and add hydrochloric acid and a little zinc chloride to this solution, so The dye crystallizes out in shiny brown leaves. It dissolves easily in water with blue-red color; The alcoholic solution, which is produced by a splendid and intensely yellow-red fluorescence. Produced on tanned cotton the dye bluish-red tones of remarkable lightfastness.
