Description
Nach B r i 11 (J. f. prakt. Method of stiffening wires and synthetic bristles linear high polymers About the behavior of polyamides when heated under dry conditions some facts have already become known. According to B r i 11 (J. f. Practical Chemistry, Vol. 161, 49) can be observed with filamentary fibers that are well oriented by mechanical treatment Form a considerable shrinkage when heated. This shrinkage are due to transverse vibrations of certain parts of the molecule that are outside of the ordered micellar area. Besides, one has already found that one Refinement of thread-shaped or ribbon-shaped, cold-stretched and hot-wet treatment farm-made polyamides achieved by making the structure more or less exposed to dry heat without tension. The treatment should last so long be carried out until the thread no longer has any significant tendency to shrink, generally about ten to fifteen minutes.
It has now been found that, surprisingly, by a similar, but for a long time the procedure was carried out using synthetic wires and bristles linear high polymers with amide groups in the chain a considerable and in their practical use very desirable stiffening experience when one of the structures after stretching and shape setting, and preferably after one Alkali treatment for a long time, that is, at least 1/2 hour, at one temperature above 120 °, preferably between 40 and 60 ° below the softening point of the high polymer suspends.
In general, the duration of the heat treatment is not longer than 3 hours, since then there is no significant improvement over shorter treatment times more is achieved.
The heat treatment according to the invention has proven particularly useful for bristles proven, which are exposed to strong moisture during use, for example bristles for toothbrushes, nail brushes, bottle brushes, test tube brushes, filter covers etc. However, the refinement according to the invention can of course also be applied to others Wires or bristles made of synthetic linear high polymers are used, as used in brooms and brushes of any kind.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples.
Example i kg of bristles with a diameter of 0.25 mm, produced by Melt spinning of the polyamide from ε-caprolactam, after a pretreatment heated in 0.7% sodium hydroxide solution at 95 ° for an hour to 140 °. The ones with hot water bristles washed and dried at 80 ° show a modulus of elasticity that is is 0.20 x ios kg / cm2 above the initial value. The elongation is from 20 to 14% decreased.
Rkm. Die Verbesserung in der Elastizität betrug 70'/0.Example e 2 kg of polyamide wire loosely wound on a spool from the polyamide from adipic acid hexamethylenediamine are after Vorbe'handl.u.ng heated to 160 ° for 1/2 hour with aqueous 1/2% soda solution. The strength values are partly higher than that of the untreated wire. The elongation values differ little different from those before treatment. The stiffness is improved by 25%. example 3 2 kg of a wire made from the polyurethane from i, @ 4-butanediol 'and i, 6 hexane diisocyanate are after a pre-treatment by boiling with a 1% aqueous strontium hydroxide solution Heated to 120 ° for i hour. The bristles had strength before treatment of 26.5 Rkm, after treatment 27, q. Rkm. The improvement in elasticity was 70 '/ 0.
