Safety device for ladders

The innovation relates to a safety device for ladders that reduces the risk of falling for those standing on a ladder.

Ladders are used in almost all areas of life to reach heights or depths. Particularly on very long ladders, the user can experience a feeling of insecurity, which in the worst case can lead to a fall.

It is known that when working with fixed ladders where there is a risk of falling, the person carrying out the work wears a safety belt, which they use to attach themselves to suitable points. In the commercial sector, the use of a safety belt is mandatory under accident prevention regulations. There are currently no such safety devices when climbing portable ladders. The user has a certain feeling of insecurity, especially when climbing relatively long ladders, since such ladders have the disadvantage of not having any safety precautions.

It has now been found that the safety device described in the claim can be used with advantage in cases where a safety belt does not appear to be suitable.

Figures 1 to 4 show two possible embodiments of the new safety device, of which the embodiment according to Figures 1 and 2 is preferred.

The safety device according to Figure 1 consists of a flat, elastic band (1), the width of which corresponds to the clear width between two ladder rungs.

The band (1) is bent into a semicircle. The ends (2) and (3) of the band (1) are bent outwards twice by 90° so that the ends (2) and (3) are parallel to the band (1). The bending edges (4) and (5) on the one hand and (6) and (7) on the other hand are arranged at a distance corresponding to the thickness of a ladder stile. At a short distance from the first bending edge in each case, in the inner part, i.e. in the present case in the band (1), a recess (8) and (9) is made on the same long edge of the band, the dimensions of which correspond to the cross-section of a ladder rung.

In the safety device according to Figure 3, the ends (2) and (3) of the band (1) are bent inwards twice by 90°. The recesses (8) and (9) are therefore located on the corresponding edges of the ends (2) and (3).
If necessary, holes (10) and (11) with a diameter of 8.5 to 17 mm can be made in the band (1) and opposite in the ends (2) and (3) at a distance of 4 to 6 cm from the bending edges (4), (5), (6) and (7).

To produce the new safety device, a strip with a length of 1.5 to 3, preferably 2 to 2.5 m, made of a plastic, preferably high-density polyethylene, with a thickness of 3 to 6, preferably about 4 mm, is bent twice by 90° on each side. The bending edges (5) and (7) are arranged about 3 to 10 cm from the short edges of the strip. The width of the plastic strip is 20 to 30, preferably 23 to 25 cm. The recesses (8) and (9) have the dimensions 3 by 2 cm and are arranged at a distance of 4 to 6 cm from the first bending edge.

To use the safety device according to Figure 1, the ends (2) and (3) are pushed through between two ladder rungs with the bending edges (4), (5), (6) and (7) first and the recesses (8) and (9) facing downwards and pressed outwards by the elasticity of the band (1). The safety device according to Figure 2 is used in such a way that the ends (2) and (3) are guided around the ladder stile from the outside and passed between two rungs from the back. By pressing down, the recesses (8) and (9) snap into place, as shown in Figure 4.

As an additional safety measure, a screw and nut of M8 to M16, preferably M10, can be fitted through holes (10) and (11) on each side, thereby achieving a positive connection between the safety device and the ladder.

The new safety device is easy to install and easy to use. Unlike a seat belt, it offers a firm backrest and support. In addition, you have both hands free to work and still have a firm grip.
