The result of a photographic recording is, after its development, a negative on a transparent cellular film or a glass plate. This is achieved by copying or enlarging, i. H. through another photographic process, a positive. This process costs time and money, especially when enlargements are required. It is therefore very desirable to be able to assess the quality of the negative before proceeding to the final positive process. Unfortunately, no one can predict how the corresponding positive will turn out by looking at the negative in incident or translucent light. In practice, small and relatively inexpensive test strips of about 25 to 38 mm in size are produced in order to make a choice on the basis of the same. However, there is an urgent need for a device by means of which one can make the positive image immediately visible without having to make a positive copy beforehand. The subject of the invention is a solution to this problem.
Fig. i a) - Das Negativ i -wird auf seiner Emulsionsseite durch starke parallele
Basically, the following principle, based on the special properties of the surface reflection on the photographic negative, is known (see Fig. Ia) - The negative i - is illuminated on its emulsion side by strong parallel light beams that strike at a certain angle a. If this light hits a transparent or white part of the negative image, such as B. the drawn - light beam 2 ", it is reflected at the same angle a, so that # z. B. the drawn beam 2"'results, with which the case of the so-called mirror reflection occurs. In addition, this reflected light is elliptically polarized, namely by #so more, the greater the insertion allswinkel a. In particular, the polarization becomes total at an angle of incidence given by the equation tg a = n, where n is the refraction ratio of the substrate.
wie in Fig. i b
The reflected light turns out to be linearly polarized (Brewster's law). This critical angle of incidence is about 35 ' for celluloid and about 45' for glass. If the rays 2 "are viewed through a pane of polarized glass, the result is complete darkness when such crystal-clear surfaces or white pixels are reflected a black pixel belongs, subjected to diffuse reflection. this is easily understood, if the formation of the silver grain schematically as a tiny metal ball 4, and now, as i shown in Fig. b, applying to the surface of this sphere point by point the law of Spiegelreflexiort In reality, a silver grain of a photographic emulsion is by no means spherical, "but diffusely reflected light is found particularly in the direction perpendicular to the reflection surface. The intensity of this light increases with decreasing angle of incidence and is approximately proportional to the number of silver grains T per unit area or the emulsion density.
An image of the illuminated surface can therefore be projected onto a screen 5 arranged parallel thereto by means of an objective 6. A Pos #, iti-v image is obtained here, since it is formed only from diffusely reflected light rays 2b ' , while the rays 2a' reflected back by specular reflection pass the lens 6.
ausgehenden diffusen Strahlen wahrnimmt.According to the invention, the effect described is improved if one takes into account the fact that the totally reflected rays 2 "" are linearly polarized according to the law of B rews te r, while the diffusely reflecting rays are not polarized Proceeding from this, according to the invention a polarization filter is provided in the observation beam path, which is shown in Fig. generally with 7. The effect of such a polarization filter consists in a substantial increase in the contrast effect, which results from the fact that totally reflected radiation components which can inevitably get into the observation beam path, especially in the case of larger negative surfaces, are completely extinguished so that the viewer only perceives the diffuse rays emanating from the SÜberstellen.
inder Fig.:2:dargestellt.
Etwa, i 0/i)
streicht.Apparatus constructed on the basis of these optical principles is shown in Fig. 2 :. A 100 watt projection lamp as well as a triple condenser 2 and a one-inch ReflektOf 3 are mounted within A. In this way a strong bundle of quasi-parallel rays of light is projected onto the film at point F. The film is located, or slides, over an area of black amt 4 which swallowed the back reflection f ast separate mode # g. About i 0 / i) of the projected luminous flux is diffusely reflected in the above-mentioned manner and passes through a polarization filter 7 to a three-lens objective 6 with an opening of i : 3.5 and a focal length of 50.8 mm. This is still enough light to achieve an image 127 mm in size on a measuring screen at G , which is clearly visible in a moderately bright room. Undesired reflection is avoided by painting the inner walls of the entire system black.
The images obtained with the device described are sharp
and bright. Thin or underexposed negatives with glassy areas are suitable
especially good for this kind of observation.
