Description
Process for the preparation of polyvinyl butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde acetals It is known that polyvinyl alcohol in the presence of acidic catalysts with butyraldehyde or isobutyraldehyde can be condensed to the corresponding acetals. Such Acetals can also be obtained by using polyvinyl esters, especially polyvinyl acetate, saponified and acetalized in organic solvents simultaneously or in succession. Both processes are technically carried out, although in addition to advantages they also have some Have disadvantages.
If you react polyvinyl alcohol in aqueous solution with butyraldehyde, acetals are obtained, which precipitate at a certain chemical composition. They are therefore very rich in hydroxyl groups and only for very special areas of application suitable. Condensation in organic solvents offers greater variation possibilities, which enables the production of acetals of practically any desired chemical composition allowed. In the case of the simultaneous saponification and acetalization that has been customary up to now two reactions of different speed are coupled with each other because the Saponification up to a certain degree of saponification proceeds faster than acetalization. (The degree of saponification is the percentage of ester groups covered by hydroxyl groups is replaced.) It is understandable that in this way products are more inconsistent Texture are preserved. Attempts have been made to address this disadvantage Fix by adding the polyvinyl acetate to the polyvinyl alcohol first saponified and then acetalized in an organic medium to the desired composition, however, these methods also have several disadvantages. For the saponification and the Condensation the same catalysts are used, mostly strong mineral acids, such as sulfuric or hydrochloric acid. If you keep the acid concentration during the saponification low, the reaction time is extended to such an extent that the process becomes technical becomes impracticable. In contrast, when the acid concentration is high, the acetals change color so strong in the subsequent condensation that it is no longer suitable for all areas of application are usable, or one must lower the temperature during the acetalization so low that that the response time is technically unsustainable. In addition, the acid saponification very poorly interrupted at a desired degree of saponification, so that rich in hydroxyl groups Acetals are difficult to obtain.
It has now been found that the disadvantages mentioned can be eliminated can, if you first have the polyvinyl esters, especially polyvinyl acetate, in the presence partially saponified by catalytic amounts of alkali and then in the presence acidic catalysts, such as strong mineral acids or acidic salts, with butyraldehyde or isobutyraldehyde condensed. The implementation is carried out in the presence of water-miscible, carried out aliphatic alcohols or mixtures thereof with esters. As alkalis For example, sodium hydroxide, sodium methylate, soda and others are suitable.
The new process has the advantage that saponification is easy can interrupt at any desired degree of saponification. So you have it in the Manual not to carry out the condensation with butyraldehyde or isobutyraldehyde until when the saponification rate is approximately equal to the acetalization rate is what is the case with a degree of saponification of about So to 85 ° / °. Through this more uniform products will be obtained.
Further, since the saponification is carried out with alkalis, the Acetahsierung the acid concentration within the usual limits for condensation be held so that no or only slight discoloration of the acetals occurs, which do not interfere with technical use. In addition, the new process has the Advantage that you can increase the concentration and shorten the reaction time, so that a considerably better space-time yield than with the previously known methods is achieved.
The saponification and acetalization is, as mentioned, in water-miscible Alcohols or mixtures of alcohols and esters at temperatures between 2o0 and the boiling point of the solvent used. At the saponification is, for example, 0.2 to 2 ° / ° alkali, in the case of acetalization up to 5 ° / ° acid added. The finished acetal solution can be fine-grained using the usual methods Powder can be precipitated, either by adding cold water or by spraying the solution in water. The precipitated product can be easily washed out and with stabilize the known stabilizers against the influence of oxygen, heat and light and is characterized by very good solubility in common solvents the end.
Since any desired composition of the polyvinyl acetal can be obtained by varying the saponification and acetalization time and the amount of butyraldehyde or isobutyraldehyde, the condensation products produced by the new process can be used for a wide variety of purposes, especially as primers or as a base material for safety glass films. EXAMPLE I 53o parts by weight of polyvinyl acetate (viscosity of a 10% solution in benzene 10 centipoise) are dissolved in 530 parts by weight of methanol under reflux and stirring. Then one part by weight of caustic soda, dissolved in 10 parts by weight of methanol, is added and saponified at about 60 ° to a degree of saponification of about 80%. 180 parts by weight of butyraldehyde and 79 parts by weight of 30% hydrochloric acid are then added to the batch and the mixture is condensed for about 8 hours at 60 ° with stirring.
The acetal solution is then diluted with 8oo parts by weight of methanol, filtered and sprayed into 30oo parts by weight of cold water with thorough stirring. The polyvinyl butyraldehyde acetal precipitates as a loose, fine-grained powder that washed neutral with distilled water and dried in a stream of air at 35 to 45 ° will. It dissolves very easily in alcohols and esters and is well suited as a paint raw material.
