Description

Flame retardant Addition to patent 8'57 189 The subject of patent 857 189 is the use of sulfamide as a flame retardant. It has now been found that it is possible to make fiber material of all kinds at the same time flame-proof and waterproof if it is treated with sulfamide and also with water-repellent agents.

A method of making fiber material non-flammable and at the same time water-repellent is not yet known. The simultaneous reduction in water absorption is very desirable if only for the reason that the agents causing the non-flammable properties are detached from the fiber, especially by rain. The most common agents for preventing the flammability of fiber material are water-soluble ammonium salts, in particular ammonium phosphate and ammonium bromide, and also boric acid and its salts. To make water repellent or to reduce the water absorbency of fibrous material z. B. aluminum or zirconium salts, usually in connection with paraffin and wax emulsions. A wash-resistant waterproofing can also be achieved, for example, by using aqueous solutions of stearyloxymethylpyridinium chloride, of emulsified fatty acid anhydrides and methyloiamides, and also of octadecyloxymethyl diethyl betaine (cf. Patent 613 735) and N-octadecyl-N ', N'-68 ethylene (cf. ) reach. All these Hydröphobierungsmittel can _ can not be applied together, as the required high amounts of inorganic salts with the aforementioned water repellents can not tolerate having the aforementioned compounds that serve the Flammsichermachung. A two-bath impregnation cannot be carried out either, because if the hydrophobization is carried out first, the goods will not be sufficiently absorbent for the subsequent treatment with the flame-retardant salts. If the flame-proofing method is carried out first, the salts are dissolved down again during the subsequent hydrophobization in the aqueous bath.

-The use of sulfamide for flame retardation overcomes these difficulties and the simultaneous hydrophobization and flame retardation of fiber material is made possible. Example z Cell wool tissue is treated in a bath which contains 30 g per liter of an emulsion of paraffin, aluminum formate and glue containing 300 % solid constituents, the sodium salt of an alkylated naphthalenesulfonic acid and roo g sulfamide as an emulsifier. The dried fabric is flame-proof, extremely water-repellent and remains non-flammable even after frequent exposure to moisture (rain). EXAMPLE 2 A tent sheet material is treated and dried in a bath containing roo g sulphamide and 50 g of an emulsion of paraffin, montan wax soap, ozokerite, a small amount of the active compound of 60 moles of ethylene oxide on sperm alcohol and zirconium oxide gel per liter: The tents made with it remain flame-proof even after prolonged exposure to rain. -
