Description

Process for the production of high pressure resistant, consistent lubricating greases For heavily loaded machine bearings of all kinds, especially for gearboxes Consistent greases with high pressure properties are required for lubrication. Required is of such high pressure greases that the lubricating film even with exceptional high pressure load does not tear and the surfaces sliding on each other before the dreaded Eating protects. Production is achieved by the method described below such high pressure resistant consistent fats.

It is known that various additives can increase the pressure resistance of lubricating oils. These are mostly organic compounds with a more or less complex structure that contain strongly polar groups of molecules. Consistent lubricating greases based on oils and soaps contain up to over 0 /, lubricating oil as the main component. It would make sense to use the same additives as for high-pressure-resistant lubricating oils in the production of consistent greases in order to achieve special high-pressure properties. Strangely, however, it has been found that effective extreme pressure additives for lubricating oils, added to consistent greases, are hardly effective. In order to increase the pressure resistance of consistent greases, other approaches must therefore be taken.

It has now been found that salts of sulfuric acid, sulphurous acid, thiosulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and boric acid are suitable as additives for the production of high-pressure-resistant, consistent fats. It was found that, surprisingly, despite their strongly polar character and the resulting salting-out effect, such salts can be incorporated into consistent fats in small amounts of up to about 2% and increase the pressure resistance of the consistent fats. There is no need to start with the finished salts. Rather, when producing consistent fats, it is expedient to provide the fat base with an excess of base, whereupon the acids corresponding to the salts mentioned are added to the brew in the form of an aqueous solution. Particularly great effects are achieved with borates and phosphates. By adding around 0.5% boric anhydride in the form of borax to a soda-saponified fat, the pressure resistance could be increased, for example, from 78o kg / CM2 bearing pressure to over 1500 kg / CM2, according to measurements on the Almenmaschine. The experiments showed that it is not necessary to add the sodium salt of one of the above-mentioned oxygen acids to a soda-saponified fat; the potassium salt or another salt can also be used for this purpose. The increase in pressure resistance through such a salt addition is evidently brought about primarily by the anion and not by the cation. If, for example, a lime-saponified fat is given an addition of sodium phosphate on one occasion and an addition of free phosphoric acid on the other using a correspondingly measured excess of lime, the effect of increasing pressure resistance is practically the same in both cases.

Example i In the production of a sodium saponified fat from 8.50 % fatty acid, 1.50 % sodium hydroxide and 50% oil , so much crystallized borax is added during the boiling process that the result is a content of 0.5 % boric anhydride: This gives a consistent grease with exceptional pressure resistance.

Belastbarkeit nach Messungen an der Almenmaschine: 1020 kg/cm', Belastbarkeit ohne Zusatz: 7oo kg/CM2.Measurements on the Almenmachine showed a load capacity of over 1500 kg / cm2. Without the addition of 1 borax, the load capacity of the grease is only 788 kg / CM2. Example 2 A soda-saponified fat, prepared from 8.50 /, fatty acids, 1.50 /, sodium hydroxide and go0 /, lubricating oil, is provided with an addition of 1 % sodium sulfate. A hot storage grease with a drop point of 162 'and high pressure properties is obtained. Load capacity according to measurements on the Almenmaschine: 1020 kg / cm ', load capacity without additive: 7oo kg / cm2.

EXAMPLE 3 A lime saponified fat is produced from 170 % fatty acids, 7% calcium oxide and 75 % 01 with the addition of 0.45% boric anhydride in the form of an aqueous boric acid solution. A machine grease with a dropping point gi 'with very high pressure resistance is obtained Measurements on the Almenmaschine, the load capacity is well over 1500 kg / cm2. For ordinary lime saponified fats the load capacity is a maximum of 100 kg / cm2.

A lime-saponified fat is produced from 20 ″ fatty acids, about 5% calcium oxide and 74% oil with the addition of 0.5% phosphoric anhydride in the form of sodium pyrophosphate. The result is a machine grease with very high pressure resistance; the Almenmaschine about i_goo kg / cm2.
