verbinden;

Suitable lactones are y-butrolactone, y- or b- @ 'alerolactone, b-
or e-caprolactone and its derivatives. As lactone-like compounds, the art> mat
ical residues may be mentioned: phthalides, coumarins or hydrocoumarins.
The reaction is expediently carried out at elevated temperatures,
especially those between about 50 ° and the boiling point of the lactone to be converted.
Equimolecular amounts of the compounds to be reacted can be heated with one another
or use an excess of the lactone, which then simultaneously acts as a thinning agent
acts and can be recovered by distillation after the reaction has ended.
You can also in the presence of inert solvents such as benzene, .Toluene
or Dckahydronaphthalin work. As conversion products, one initially receives
the salts of the thioether carbonates, which by treatment with stronger acids,
z. B. mineral acids, can easily be converted into the free acids.
z. B. für die Lack- und Isunststoffindltstrie. The thioether carboxylic acids are either as such or in the form of them
Free salts or esters are valuable textile auxiliaries or valuable intermediate products
z. B. for the paint and plastic industry.

Man läßt
The parts given in the following examples are parts by weight.

Stirring registered in 258 parts of γ-butyrolactone. The mixture is slow at first
heated to 9o 'and then, when the lively conversion has subsided, to 17o °,
until it's solidified to a pulp. After the work-up indicated in Example i
the y-phenylmercaptobutyric acid (1p;: 182 °; melting point 68 to 69 °) is obtained in one
Yield of 95% of the calculated amount. Example 3 146 parts of sodium p-thiocresol,
prepared by exposing 23 parts of sodium to a 124 parts solution
p-Thiocresol in toluene and suction of the precipitated sodium salt, are with
86o parts of butyrolactone heated. The initially resulting stiff pulp begins at
14o ° to become thin and has gone completely into solution at i5o °. One lets
cool, work up as indicated in Example i and receive in good yield
y- (p-tolylmercapto) -butyric acid (hpa: 180 °; melting point 81 °). Example 4 A mixture
. From 182 parts of thio-f-naphthol sodium and 86o parts of y-butyrolactone is under
Stirring heated to 16o to 17o ° until the lively reaction has ended. Then work
as indicated in Example i and obtained from the oily layer after distilling off
of the excess butyrolactone a crystallized residue which, from a
Mixture of hexahydrotoluene and benzene recrystallized, melts at 88 to 89 ° J.
According to the analysis, it consists of y - naphthVl- (2)] - mercaptobutyric acid.
