(K 1 a t s c h k' o , Chemisches Zentralblatt 1937 I, 4t56).
Process for the production of light-colored and low-odor sulphonation products from smoldering oils The sulphonation of sulphurous and / or oxygen-containing smoldering oils from oil shale, lignite and the like results in products that are mostly dark in color and have a peculiar smell. The latter can be partially removed by heating in a vacuum while passing steam through it (Patent 118452); but for use as a wetting agent and detergent, the dark color of the z. B. uncomfortable from shale oils sulfonates produced, so that these products despite their otherwise good qualities only to a limited extent be used (K 1 atschk 'o, Chemisches Zentralblatt 1937 I, 4t56). The carriers of the odor are evidently sulfur and / or oxygen compounds or their condensation products, known as sulfones, which are desired to remain in sulfonates to be used as medicinal products. It has therefore been proposed to carefully refine the starting oils for the production of light-colored sulphonates intended for pharmaceutical purposes so that most of the sulfur compounds remain in the oil, and then to sulphonate the raffinates gently (Patent 6243t7). Here were z. B. hard coal, brown coal or shale tar distillates with strong sodium hydroxide solution and 40- to 75% strength sulfuric acid and fuller's earth treated so that the sulfur content of the oils remained practically the same or was even enriched in the raffinate.

mit der Extraktion auch eine bereits merkliche Polymerisation von Olefinen u. dgl.;

Lignite tar distillates with large amounts of sulfuric acid of increasing concentration (6o to go ° jo) can extract sulfur and oxygen compounds and at the same time polymerize the oils (Ruhemann, Zeitschr. F. Angewandte Chemie 193 i, p. 75 ff.). From this publication, however, it could not be inferred that the refining of the distillates would be able to be carried out in a thoroughly economical and effective manner with far smaller amounts of sulfuric acid of the concentration mentioned, namely about 5 to 15 percent by volume. The cited publication also does not disclose the knowledge that the raffinates can be converted directly into sulfonic acids of valuable wetting, dispersing, emulsifying and sulfonic acids without intermediate distillation with the aid of powerful sulfonating agents such as concentrated sulfuric acid, oleum, chlorosulfonic acid and the like Can convert detergent properties.
