Description

B. Invertzucker, Ahornzucker u. a. Preparing Tobacco and Tobacco Products To make tobacco products of constant quality To create moisture content, one has to do besides maintaining more suitable ones physical conditions in the processing of tobacco and the use of Packs, which reduce the loss of moisture as much as possible, already suggested the addition of hygroscopic substances. In addition to glycerine, there are also other polyhydric alcohols, such as glycol and especially sorbitol, are possible. Sugar too various origins were used, e.g. B. invert sugar, maple sugar and others. Some of these additives also have an improving effect on the taste and soften it, especially with scratchy tobacco types. Another important problem is contraception mold formation during conditioning and storage of tobacco products. To kill the mold you have to use strong disinfectants, such as formic acid, 8-oxyquinoline sulfonic acid salts, esters or salts of benzoic acid, p-Oxybenzoic acid and others, i.e. substances whose presence in tobacco is undesirable and is even disadvantageous at times.

It has now been found that the hydrogenation of formose (cf. K a r r e r, textbook d. organ. Chemie 1943, p. 361) available mixtures of polyvalent Alcohols are particularly valuable agents for the preparation of tobacco and tobacco products are. These hydrogenation products are viscous, freely miscible with water Syrups; their addition not only makes it more difficult to dry out, but also works in large quantities of about 3 per cent at the same time as a preservative for the tobacco by adding it prevents mold formation even with 30% water content in the tobacco. He also mitigates the taste of nicotine-heavy and scratchy tobacco. The use of hydrogenation products of formose, especially those that contain copper when used Catalysts are obtained is also physiologically harmless.

In addition to small amounts of ethylene glycol, the hydrogenation products mentioned contain generally mainly propylene glycol-i. 2, glycerine, erythrite and pentite and hexites.

The parts given in the following example are parts by weight. EXAMPLE A mixture of 4 parts of 30% formaldehyde solution and 3 parts of methanol in the presence of 0.08 parts of calcium hydroxide is heated to a low boiling point, whereupon a condensation reaction begins. After about 30 minutes, the condensation has ended. Marr then falls. the dissolved lime either in the warm with carbonic acid or with oxalic acid, filtered and the methanol is distilled off. The aqueous solution, which contains 25 to 30% condensation product, is then hydrogenated at from 120 to 140 ° with the addition of about 2% of an activated powdered copper catalyst at pressure until the sugar reaction has disappeared. After filtering off the catalyst and possible bleaching with charcoal, the mixture is evaporated in vacuo to give a syrup or a solution containing about 70% condensation product. The latter is easier to handle for the ear smoke.

From this solution brings you, possibly after dilution with water, by spraying such an amount onto the tobacco leaves that this 1 to 3 percent by weight of the condensation product.
