Process for the production of urea-formaldehyde condensation products
It is known that urea-formaldehyde condensation products can be prepared in this way
can that one in the production process of the condensation product, and best of all
during or after the concentration of the aqueous resin solution, organic solvents
adds and distilled further.
It has now been found that high-quality I-urea-formaldehyde condensation products
obtained when formaldehyde and urea are separated in a suitable organic
Solvent in the presence of limited amounts of water or with exclusion
dissolved or suspended in water and in the presence or absence of special condensation agents,
best in the warmth, condensed. It is advisable to work with starting materials,
that contain little or no water. One can find solutions in this way
Obtain condensation products that are largely anhydrous. There is no need
therefore, provided that the solutions are used as such and not fixed from the outset
Want to get products, in most cases a distillation. In the preparation of
of the condensation products, additives such as natural or synthetic resins, cellulose esters,
Plasticizers, dyes, etc., either prior to condensation in the solvent
dissolved or added during or after the condensation in solid form or in solution
will. In any case, care must be taken that the water content of the solution
is only so large that the additives do not flocculate.
The solvents used are advantageously those which have both the
Condensation products than in the case of the use of additives, these too
be able to solve. For example, the following have proven useful:
Ethylene chlorohydrin, glycol monoacetate, glycol monoalkyl ethers and the like can also be used
Use mixtures of different solvents or e.g. B. the formaldehyde in one,
dissolve the urea in the other.
zu.The method can be carried out in the most varied of ways, with
it is only to be noted that one, if one does not want to obtain opaque solutions,
generally allows the urea solution to run slowly into the formaldehyde solution.
For example, paraformaldehyde can be dissolved in a suitable solvent
and to the warm solution a likewise warm solution of urea in the same
or another organic solvent gradually add, or dissolve
gaseous, anhydrous formaldehyde in the solvent., optionally adds
Additives are added and condensed with a solution of Harmstoff in an organic
Means, or you ask first
the condensation product in the
Solvent and then give solutions of the additives in the same solvent
to.
Man
Beispiel i 3 kg Harnstoff, 8o g Mononatriurnphosphat
in 15 1 Glykolmonomethyläther hinzugegeben.
Andererseits werden ¢d.kg Paraformaldehyd (etwa go°/oig), 6,7 kg Nitrocellulose
und 13,5 kg Phthal-" säureäthylester in 150 1 Glykolmonoacetat gelöst. Man läßt
nun die Harnstofflösung in dünnem Strahl in die schwach siedende Formaldehydlösung
einlaufen.
in 41 Glykolmonomethyläther versetzt. In the case of the condensation of urea and formaldehyde in the presence of bases, it has already been proposed to use the formaldehyde in the form of a solution of anhydrous formaldehyde, but it could not be inferred from this that if urea and formaldehyde are dissolved or suspended separately in organic solvents and then the solutions together, particularly high-quality condensation products would arise. The production of urea-formaldehyde condensation products is a complex reaction in which variants appear to be insignificant. can have a great influence on the course of condensation. You also have urea with aldehydes other than formaldehyde, z. B. enanthol, benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde, condensed to ureides, the urea was used in alcoholic solution. The condensation of urea and formaldehyde under the special working conditions of the present invention cannot be inferred from this information either. Finally, phenols and formaldehyde have also been condensed in the presence of a known organic solvent for natural resins. It was also not possible to infer from these data that in the present case, where it is exclusively a question of the condensation of urea and formaldehyde, in the presence of organic solvents, condensation products, let alone particularly valuable condensation products, would be obtained, since they are are two very different reactions. EXAMPLE i 3 kg of urea, 80 g of mononatrium phosphate and 20 g of disodium phosphate are dissolved in 31/2 liters of methyl or ethyl alcohol and added warm to a mixture of 7 kg of 5qojoigen paraformaldehyde in 15 liters of glycol monomethyl ether. The solution of the condensation product is as such, e.g. B. as paint, can be used. Example e 30 kg of urea are dissolved in 60 l of hot glycol monoacetate, and 100 cc of 30% acetic acid are added. On the other hand, ¢ d.kg of paraformaldehyde (about 100%), 6.7 kg of nitrocellulose and 13.5 kg of ethyl phthalate are dissolved in 150 l of glycol monoacetate. The urea solution is now allowed to run in a thin stream into the low-boiling formaldehyde solution. After the reaction has ended, the boiling is continued for a short time. If excretions occur, they can be dissolved by adding a little hydrochloric acid and further boiling. EXAMPLE 3 3 kg of urea are dissolved in 7 l of glycol monomethyl ether at 90 to 100 ° and the solution 2o ccm of concentrated hydrochloric acid are added gradually to 11.5 liters of a 3 ¢ volume percent solution of gaseous formaldehyde in glycol monomethyl ether heated to boiling point .
