Description
Process for the production of emulsions It was found that one valuable emulsions of the water-in-oil type are obtained when ester-like products are used from subsequent fatty acids of paraffin oxidation with polyhydric alcohols, in which only a small part of the oxy groups is esterified with solid or liquid hydrocarbons mixed and then saponified with small amounts of aqueous alkali solution.
The esters to be used for the process can, for. B. in the way be prepared that one by known methods lignite paraffin Paraffins, petroleum fractions or carbohydrate products available for carbohydrate hydrogenation oxidized and the saponifiable fractions of the oxidation products or fractions thereof freed from low-boiling components by distillation to such an extent that the residues at least 50% at normal pressure above 350 "C, <ler at reduced Pressure above corresponding temperatures contain boiling components, whereupon these so-called trailing fatty acids z. B. with ethylene, propylene or butylene glycols, Glycerin, butanetriol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane, hexanetriol, pentitol, hexitol, Di-, tri- or polyglycols, thiodiglycol, polyglycerols, 4,4-dioxydibutyl ether or polyallyl alcohols esterified in such a ratio that only a small amount Part of the oxy groups is esterified.
Solid or liquid hydrocarbons according to the invention with these esters are to be mixed, are, for. B. hard and soft paraffin, ceresin, Ozokerite, carbon dioxide hydrogenation products and mineral oils. These substances are well known otherwise not cd r only with the use of larger amounts of saponifiable waxes or Fats can be emulsified in water, mostly resulting in emulsions of the oil-in-water type. It is therefore a important technical advancement that one on produce water-in-oil emulsions from the substances mentioned in the specified manner can, which are very desirable for many purposes. In some cases it is also used small amounts of free tail fatty acids or other saponifiable substances are beneficial. It has the advantage that you can use milder alkali, z. B. alkali carbonate, cyclohexylamine or ethanolamines, instead of or in addition to alkali hydroxide.
The amount of alkali used for saponification is such that it is about half the saponification number of the total mixture; one uses more Alkali, an oil-in-water emulsion is obtained. The most favorable proportions to be used of the components can easily be determined from case to case by means of preliminary tests.
The emulsions obtained are stable and water-repellent; let them Dilute with gasoline or mineral oils and as emulsion lubricating oils, as bases Use for skin creams and ointments, for shoe, floor or furniture care products, etc.
The parts mentioned in the examples are parts by weight.
Example I 75 parts of lubricating oil are made with 25 parts of an ester 1 mole of pentaerythritol and 1 mole of tail fatty acid heated to about 1000 in a water bath. A hot solution of I is added in small portions with constant stirring Part of caustic potash, dissolved in 12 parts of water, and continues the heat treatment for so long until the caustic potash is practically completely bound. This is in general the case after about 1/2 hour. You work in the hot, concentrated emulsion while warming gradually a further 88 parts of hot water with constant stirring a. After cooling, a viscous, stable emulsion is obtained, which is water-repellent, but can be easily diluted with liquid hydrocarbons such as mineral oil, gasoline and the like is. It can be used with advantage as an emulsion lubricating oil.
Example 2 In the manner described in Example I, one first sets from 75 parts of vaseline oil, 25 parts of the pentaerythritol ester mentioned in Example I and tail fatty acid, 1.2 parts of caustic potash and 100 parts of water a concentrated Produces an emulsion and works in the heat in small proportions with constant stirring another 200 parts of hot water. After cooling, during which one is expedient Continuing to stir, creates a creamy mass that serves as the basis for skin cream and similar cosmetic products.
Example 3 50 parts of paraffin and 25 parts are heated in a water bath of an ester of 1 mole of pentaerythritol and 1.5 moles of tail fatty acid, saponified with a hot solution of 1 part of caustic potash in 20 parts of water and works even more 130 parts of water. After cooling, a solid paste is obtained that is water-repellent, but can be diluted with liquid hydrocarbons.
Example 4 In the manner explained in the previous examples is made from 30 parts of hard ceresin, 25 parts of ester from 1 mole of pentaerythritol and I mole of fatty acid and I part of caustic potash, dissolved in 20 parts of water, a paste in which you first have 120 parts of hot water and then 30 parts of white spirit stirs in. A soft, pliable paste is obtained, which is used for the production of Shoe, floor and furniture care products are very suitable. The ones made with it Wax coatings show great resistance to water.
In the example given, it is also possible to use part of the ceresine by paraffin or natural or artificial hard waxes, such as carnauba wax, montan wax and the like, without impairing good emulsifiability, so that the properties of the wax base according to the requirements of the intended use can vote.
