FRIED. W. DUPRE and CECIL N. HAKE in STASSFURT. Process for the preparation of potassium sulfate direct from Schön it.
Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom 21. Januar 1879 ab.Patented in the German Empire on January 21, 1879.
If a very dilute, cold or hot solution of Schönit is mixed with hydrated lime, so a strong voluminous precipitate forms, the solution solidifies to a paste, which practically prevents the further recovery of the liquid contained in this pulp.
If, on the other hand, finely ground schoenite is mixed with the amount of slaked or unslaked lime necessary for the decomposition of the magnesium sulphate contained in it and this mixture is then calcined, or especially if slaked lime has been added to the mixture or the mixture is moistened with unslaked lime, a few days If left to your own devices, the resulting crystalline water of Schönite promotes the decomposition by the lime, in both cases a hard mass 1 from which the potassium sulphate can be extracted relatively easily with water. The solution obtained in this way contains all of the potassium sulphate of the Schönite used and only a little calcium sulphate.
Hierauf gründen wir folgende Methode:On this we base the following method:
The Schönite becomes intimately in the ground state with slaked or unslaked lime mixed and the mass during mixing, in order to achieve a complete mixture, slightly moistened. It is expedient to take 14 parts of lime per 100 parts of Schönit, roughly according to the equation:
K2 SO, + MgSO, 6 ag + CaO = K2 SO, + Ca SO, + MgO.K 2 SO, + MgSO, 6 ag + CaO = K 2 SO, + Ca SO, + MgO.
Die Masse wird nun entwederThis initially almost dry mixture of Schönite and lime becomes during the mixing by the released crystalline water of the Schönite gradually plastic. the Mass will now either
1. calcinirt oder1. calcined or
2. einige Tage sich selbst überlassen.2. Left to yourself for a few days.
In both cases a hard mass is obtained which can be leached without difficulty can be. By repeatedly using the lye obtained in this way (after separating the dissolved in the heat Potassium sulfate) for further leaching, water consumption is kept to a minimum, the solubility of the gypsum is greatly reduced, and any Epsom salt content is immediately restored removed.
