Process for the production of FurfuroI It is known that from pentose-containing
Material is formed by heating with dilute mineral acid furfural. That
Furfurol can be extracted from its solution after distillation or extraction with
subsequent fractionation can be obtained. It is also known that during the extraction
of the furfural formed in this way with an organic one, but not with water
miscible solvents, the extraction can be made more advantageous,
that the aqueous solution is added before the formation of the furfural salts, which
reduce the solubility of furfural in the aqueous medium.
.The production of furfural always starts from a raw material which contains pentosans, and these pentosans are first converted to pentoses by hydrolysis. The conversion of the pentosans into pentoses does not cause any major difficulties; on the other hand, it is not easy to obtain furfural from the solution of the pentoses without major losses. When furfural is formed under the action of the acid, an equilibrium is established between the pentoses and furfural. Furfural is formed all the faster and more completely, the quicker and more completely this reaction product is removed from the aqueous solution during its formation. This disrupts the equilibrium and further amounts of pentoses are converted into furfural. If the furfural is not removed, it accumulates, since it is water-soluble, and this accumulation of furfural in the solution counteracts the further conversion. One has to resort to stronger means, and in doing so the pentoses are also attacked. Resin formation occurs and with it losses, which considerably impair the yield of furfural. Specifically, it has already been proposed (Patent 389 4S5) to carry out the conversion of the pentoses into furfural in a rectifying column under pressure. This route does not lead to satisfactory results, however, since the conversion of the pentoses into furfural can be carried out up to a maximum of almost 70%. Attempts have now been made (ainerilca. Niche patent specification 2 o78 24i) to convert the furfural formed immediately with an organic solvent to extract. However, the furfural is relatively readily soluble in water and can therefore not easily be removed from the aqueous solution with an organic solvent. Salts have therefore been added to the aqueous solution in order to reduce the solubility of the furfural in water and thereby facilitate the transition of the furfural into the organic solvent. In this process a yield is obtained which can rise to about 80%, but the residue can no longer be used, and the use of the organic solvent also increases the costs to such an extent that the value of the favorable yield is not at all more is considered. .
It has now been found that furfural can be obtained from pentosene
Make material much more beneficial by heating with hydrohalic acid
can if one does not resort to the extraction method, but the furfural that is formed
distilled off immediately after its formation, but to speed it up
the distillation before the formation of the furfural of the pentose solution common salt or
Calcium chloride adds. One achieves by this measure that the equilibrium
between the liquid solution and the vapor phase in favor of furfural in the
Vapor phase is shifted. But since the vapor phase has any large amounts of furfural
can absorb and these amounts can be removed again immediately by condensation
such a disruption of the solution equilibrium is of much more decisive importance
Effect than during extraction. It increases the concentration of furfural in
the resulting condensates are very important. This makes this effect special
great that the conversion of the pentoses into furfural is carried out under pressure. By
the accelerated conversion of the furfural into the vapor phase becomes the rate of formation
of furfural from the pentose solution is considerably increased, and consequently the
Loss diminished by the inevitable decomposition of the pentoses beneath
the prevailing reaction conditions arise. A yield is therefore obtained
to furfural, the opposite of the well-known modes of representation described above
is increased by 10 to 20 0 (0. In the method according to the invention,
-worked under pressure.
The addition of table salt or Calciuniclilorids to the solution of the pentoses
has the further advantage that when you achieve equally favorable results
can reduce the pressure in relation to the work in a salt-free medium. If
for example, a pressure of 2 atm for a certain conversion speed
must be used in a salt-free solution, you can with the addition of 10% table salt up to
Go down 1.5 atm without changing the reaction conditions. The overpass
the pentoses in furfural are 82 to 85%, depending on the working conditions.
If one takes into account that the conversion of the pentosans to pentoses has a yield of
results above 92%, it follows that according to the present process pentosan is above pentoses
can be converted into furfural with a yield of about 78%, while all previous
Working methods either did not lead to yields above ho% or, provided that
they gave higher yields on another basis, were uneconomical.
etwa 6,5 % Furfurol. It has already been proposed that in the production of furfural from pentoses, finite mineral acids, either add an inorganic neutral salt or use hydrochloric acid. In both cases, however, a very low yield was achieved. On the other hand, if, according to the proposal of the present invention, both measures are used at the same time, then not only does this result in a particularly favorable mode of operation, but also a very considerable increase in the yield. Embodiments: i. The starting solution for furfural production is a pentose solution obtained by extracting beech wood with dilute mineral acid. 7000 ccm of this solution, which has a content of d.0 / 0 pentoses, calculated as furfural, are mixed with 10% common salt and brought to an acid content of 1.5% hydrochloric acid. The mixture is then heated at a pressure of 1.5 atmospheres and the pentoses are converted into furfural in this way. The rate of distillation is adjusted so that about 750 cc of condensate is obtained in 10 minutes. The total condensate contains about 6.5% furfural.
Das Kondensat wird- anschließend fraktioniert. Vorteilhafter kann
man das entstehende
Destillat ohne vorherige Kondensation direkt
der Fraktionierung unterwerfen. The condensate is then fractionated. Can be more beneficial
one the emerging
Direct distillate without prior condensation
subject to fractionation.
Die Ausbeute an Furfurol beträgt 83,5
0/0 des Einsatzes an Pentosen. The yield of furfural is 83.5 % of the use of pentoses.
in io Minuten anfallen. Das Gesamtkondensat enthält dann etwa 6,3 % Furfurol.z. 7000 ccm of the pentose solution used above are mixed with 5% calcium chloride and brought to an acid content of 1.5%. The pentoses are then reacted at a pressure of 45 atmospheres and the furfural which is formed is distilled off. If the vapors are not fed directly to the fractionation, but rather condensed, the speed is regulated so that about 750 cc of condensate are produced in 10 minutes. The total condensate then contains about 6.3% furfural.
Die Ausbeute an Furfurol beträgt 85,=1% des Einsatzes an Pentosen. The yield of furfural is 85 = 1% of the use of pentoses.
