Nach den neuesten Erkenntnissen der Unfallforschung ist eine bisher häufig unterschätzte Todesursache die Unterkühlung. ( Dies gilt im besonderen Maß auch für in Seenot geratene Personen.) Diesen Erkenntnissen Rechnung tragend wurde der Rettungssack entwickelt. Seit Jahren hat sich bei Autounfällen die Rettungsdecke, deren wesentliches Merkmal eine dünne, mit hochreflektierender Metallschicht versehene Kunststoff-Folie, ist bewährt. Untersuchungen und Entwicklungen ergaben, daß z.B. für Seenotfälle ein sackartiges Gebilde aus dünner flexibler kältebeständiger und mit einem reflektiven Metallbelag versehener Kunststoff-Folie beste Restiltate zeigte. Durch den Rettungssack ist der in Not geratene gegen Vind, Wasser und Unterkühlung geschützt. Dabei konnte die Bedingung, daß solch ein Schutz einen möglichst kleinen Platzbedarf bei der lagerung hat, voll erfüllt werden.
