Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing a yarn for an artificial turf by extruding a polymeric material into a single thread, stretching the single thread at an increased temperature, relaxing the single thread so that a band is formed, and twisting several bands into a yarn.
A process of this kind is known from EP-A-417 832, whereby a yarn is produced by extruding granulate and from the extruded product ribbons with a width of 2 to 3 mm are produced, which after stretching have a width of 1 to 2 mm, while the thickness is 50 to 70% of the original thickness of the extruded ribbons, whereupon 5 to 10 ribbons are twisted together to form a yarn. It has now been found that the mechanical properties of the yarn can be improved by giving the yarn a predetermined shape, which is obtained by extruding the individual threads and by stretching them under special circumstances described below.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the extrusion takes place with its spinning plate, the shape of which is such that the individual threads obtained, which have projections regularly spaced in cross-section with a height of 10 to 40% of the thickness of the individual thread without projections, have a thickness of 100 to 700 µm and a width of 1 to 5 mm, after which the stretching takes place in a stretching ratio of between 1:2 and 1:10, whereby ribbons with a thickness of 50 to 350 µm and a width of 0.5 to 2 mm are obtained after relaxation and cooling, after which 5 to 10 ribbons are twisted together to obtain the said yarn.
According to the invention, the polymer to be used is preferably a block copolymer consisting of polypropylene and polyethylene, which is marketed by Solvay, Belgium. In particular, the individual threads have a thickness of 100 to 150 µm and a width of 1 to 1.5 mm after stretching. This is particularly the case when a stretching ratio of 1:3 to 1:6 is used.
The yarn produced according to EP-A-4 17832 has the property that it subsequently frays less than the yarns known up to that point, which extends the life of the yarn and the artificial turf produced from this yarn can be played on for longer. The playing properties can be maintained for a longer period of time because the grass field becomes less compact due to the rubbed-off particles. A further effect achieved with the method according to the invention is that the yarn becomes less susceptible to breakage. This is due in particular to the fact that the yarn cross-section has a knotty structure, with the knots on the individual threads being regularly spaced and thus also on the yarn produced from such individual threads.
The invention is explained in more detail below, with reference to the attached drawing, which shows the cross section of the extruded single thread.
In Fig. 1, the core of the monofilament is shown at 1 and the projections at 2. The thickness of the monofilament is about 100 µm and the projections have a height of 10 to 20 µm. The monofilaments shown in Fig. 1 have a width of 1 to 5 mm and the projections are preferably provided on both sides of the monofilament.
The invention is explained in more detail by means of the following examples, it being obvious that the invention is not limited to these examples.
An extruder was fed with a block polymer composed of polyethylene and polypropylene, marketed by Solvay, Belgium, and having a melting point of about 4. By using a spinning plate with a large number of openings, several individual threads as shown in Fig. 1 were produced simultaneously, which had a thickness of 300 µm and a width of 2.8 mm before stretching. The stretching process took place at a temperature of 130 ºC in a hot air oven with a stretch ratio of 1:5 and resulted in a ribbon with a size of 115 µm thick and 1.1 mm wide. To relax the tension, the ribbons were reheated by feeding them to rollers having a contact temperature of 155 ºC and then they were cooled by contact rollers with a contact temperature of 25 ºC and lower speed so that the ribbons were somewhat compressed and the size of the compressed ribbons was 125 µm in thickness and 1.2 mm in width. By relaxing the yarn became less sensitive to shrinkage during processes at elevated temperatures. A yarn was then made from these strips by twisting six strips together. The resulting yarn was tufted to form the turf for the artificial turf. The turf was intended for hockey and had 280 stitches per metre and a pile height of 25 mm. The carpet thus obtained was subjected to tests to determine its mechanical properties. These mechanical properties were tested in particular using treadle wheels. These tests were carried out at 2550 and 5000 revolutions and the carpet made from the yarn obtained according to the invention was compared with the carpet made from the yarn according to European patent application 417 832. The results are summarised in Table A.
An extruder was fed with a block polymer composed of polyethylene and polypropylene marketed by Solvay, Belgium, and having a melting point of 4. By using a spinning plate with a large number of openings, monofilaments as shown in Fig. 1 were simultaneously produced, which had a thickness of 300 µm and a width of 2.25 mm before stretching. Stretching was carried out at a temperature of 130 ºC in a hot air oven with a stretch ratio of 1:3. After relaxation, a tape with a width of 1.2 mm and a thickness of 135 µm was obtained. A yarn was made from these tapes by twisting eight tapes together. The yarn obtained in this way was processed into artificial turf using a tufting process.
Tabelle A The yarn thus obtained was subjected to tests to determine its mechanical properties. These mechanical properties were determined in particular by means of treadle tests. These tests were carried out at 2,250 and 5,000 revolutions. The results are summarized in Table A. Table A
The carpet obtained from the known yarn broke at just 3,000 revolutions, while the carpet made from the yarn produced according to the invention showed no signs of pile breakage up to 5,000 to 7,500 revolutions.
The procedure of Example 1 was repeated using pure polypropylene instead of block polymer. The results obtained with pure polypropylene are the same as those of Example 1.
