Description
The present invention relates to bleaching compositions primarily for use in laundry applications. The compositions according to the present invention, which contain hydrogen peroxide as well as peracid precursors, are stable with respect to storage.
Bleaching compositions using hydrogen peroxide have been extensively described in the art. Such hydrogen peroxide bleaches have an advantage over chlorine bleaches in that they are more environmentally friendly. Another advantage is that they are "milder" bleaches. This latter advantage is particularly significant in laundry applications since hydrogen peroxide bleaches are safer for fabrics.
A major disadvantage of hydrogen peroxide bleaches is that they are less active than chlorine bleaches at low temperatures commonly encountered in modern laundry applications. Thus, hydrogen peroxide bleach activators have been developed and well described in the art. These activators are primarily transition metals or peracid precursors. Peracid precursors react with hydrogen peroxide to form peracids. Peracids are the "activated" bleach compounds that are efficient at low temperatures.
A problem encountered in the formulation of such "activated" hydrogen peroxide bleach compositions is the difficulty of obtaining a composition that is both chemically and physically stable. Indeed, such prior art compositions are either turbid suspensions of insoluble activators with good chemical stability or clear compositions with poor chemical stability which result in significant and undesirable oxygen release.
It has now been found that this problem can be addressed by formulating a bleaching composition comprising hydrogen peroxide, an organic peracid precursor selected from a specific class, e.g. glycol and glycerol esters, and by formulating this composition in a narrow acidic pH range. The mild acidic pH range allows adequate chemical stability for both the hydrogen peroxide and the organic peracid precursor. The activation of hydrogen peroxide by the formation of a peracid is enhanced by the pH increase which occurs upon dilution in the wash water, particularly when a Detergent composition, which causes further alkalinity, is also present in the wash water.
Glycol esters have frequently been described as solvents in detergent and bleach compositions. Such compositions have been described, for example, in US-A-3,956,159. These compositions have a pH of 6.5 and above.
These compositions are formulated at a neutral or slightly basic pH.
Bleaching compositions for various applications containing triacetin are also described in JVP-A-62001792, JP-A-62001794, JP-A-62001796 and JP-A-61042600 (abstracts).
B. 1,1,5-Triacetoxypent-4-en, 1,1,5,5- Tetraacetoxypentan, die entsprechenden Buten- und Butanverbindungen, Ethylidenbenzoatacetat und Bis(ethylidenacetat)adipat beinhalten.EP-A-125 781 describes bleaching compositions containing hydrogen peroxide and a certain peroxyacid generator such as 1,1,5-triacetoxypent-4-ene, 1,1,5,5-tetraacetoxypentane, the corresponding butene and butane compounds, ethylidene benzoate acetate and bis(ethylidene acetate) adipate.

All of these compounds are well-known chemicals which are commercially available or can be synthesized according to the chemical literature.
Preferred such peracid precursors for use in the compositions according to the present invention are selected from ethylene glycol diesters, triacetin and diacetin or mixtures thereof. Particularly preferred compounds are triacetin and ethylene glycol diacetate.
