Description
The invention relates to a method for producing melting and laminating tapes, or for producing, fusing and laminating tapes.
Endless belts for use in fusion and lamination are known which comprise a base fabric to which a coating of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is applied. Although the base fabric normally has a woven form with open ends and the ends are subsequently joined together, it is preferred to weave such fabrics in an endless form in order to avoid seam formation.
There are several patents which disclose an industrial fabric or article having a layer containing beads. Patent FR-A-2 178 005 discloses a composition containing PTFE mixed with glass beads to form a fabric or article which is airtight and suitable for use in inflatable structures. FR-A-2 178 005 is concerned with providing an airtight fabric.
Die Beschichtung ist mittels bekannter Verfahren aufgebracht.FR-A-2 400 658 relates to a flexible base onto which a coating material containing silicates is applied, the silicates being added to improve abrasion resistance.
A discloses a rust-proof polyester fabric material having a number of resin coatings applied thereto, using inorganic free particles to capture dyes migrating through the resin.
Material für die Verwendung als Dachbedeckungsmittel.JP 63 222 852 A relates to a coated fabric or material for use as a roof covering.
Surface smoothness is an important consideration in the fusing and laminating of tapes, particularly in the case of tapes for use in fine, high quality material laminates, where inappropriate protrusions on the surface of the tape in the underlying fabric pattern can result in unacceptable marking or embossing in the material laminate. These problems are not addressed in the prior art documents discussed above.
In accordance with the present invention, a method is proposed for manufacturing an industrial fabric or industrial product, in particular a melting or laminating tape or melting or laminating tape, which comprises the step of providing a woven base fabric having opposing fabric surfaces and recesses formed in these surfaces, which are formed by and between the threads of the fabric present on the surfaces, and the step of applying successive coating layers of a synthetic plastic coating material to the base fabric, said application of the successive coating layers comprising the step of filling the recesses of at least one of the opposing surface fabrics by said application, said filling step being carried out using a leak coating technique on at least one of the synthetic plastic coating layers containing silicate bodies, followed by a further coating of at least one of the synthetic plastic coating layers under using a dip coating technique, thereby producing a coated fabric having substantially no reproduction of the surface profile of the base fabric at the belt surface, wherein the initial coating step to fill the recesses is a leak coating step.
In accordance with a preferred feature, a tie coating is applied on the base fabric before the application of the coating layers containing the silicate bodies takes place.
The method according to the present invention proposes a fusion or lamination belt comprising an endless woven base fabric, the base fabric having opposing fabric surfaces and recesses in the surfaces formed by and between the threads of the fabric present on the surfaces, successive coating layers of synthetic plastic material being applied to the fabric by leak coating and by at least one subsequent dip coating step, and the layer applied by leak coating contains silicate bodies such that reproduction of the surface profile of the base fabric on the belt surface is substantially prevented.
Preferably, the silicate bodies comprise glass beads with a diameter between 20 and 250 µm.
The present invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings:
Fig. 1 zeigt die Verfahrensschritte gemäß der Erfindung in Forrn einer beispielhaften Anwendung bei einem Ausführungsbeispiel der Erfmdung, undFig. 1 shows the method steps according to the invention in the form of an exemplary application in an embodiment of the invention, and
Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal section cut through a fabric coating formed in accordance with the method of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, and in particular to Fig. 1, in coating a woven base fabric to provide a laminating tape, an endless woven fabric 11 is laid under tension on a plurality of horizontal rollers 12, 13 and 14 arranged in spaced apart relationship above a supply of coating material contained in a tank 15, the endless woven fabric 11 being successively brought into contact with and withdrawn from the coating material 16 present in the tank 15 to thereby pick up material from the tank 15.
Conveniently, the tank 15 is raised or lowered to thereby bring the coating material 16 into contact with the belt 17 which is present on the rollers 12, 13 and 14, the extent of movement being determined such that the lower part 18 of the belt 17 is brought into immersion in the coating material 16 or simply into contact with its surface 19, depending on the type of coating step required.
In the embodiment shown, three rollers are provided, two of these rollers 12, 13 being arranged at a common level and serving to support the fabric 11/belt 17, while the third roller 17 is at a lower level and serves to position the lower part of the fabric/belt in the manner of a guide roller. At least one of the upper rollers 12, 13 is driven in such a way that the fabric/belt is transported around the roller arrangement.
The working steps are shown in Fig. 1 and include sequentially dip coating steps, Fig. 1b to 1e, a leak coating step, Fig. 1f and 1g, two dip coating steps, Fig. 1h to 1k, and a further leak coating step, Fig. 11 and 1m, each step including drying/sintering the applied layer, Fig. 1c, 1e, 1g, 1i, 1k and 1m.
The base fabric 21 consists of a flat woven structure as shown in Fig. 2 and is woven from multi-fiber yarns 22, 23 made of Kevlar or Technora with 1100 dtex, the warp and weft densities in the loom being 11.22 and 9.45 threads/cm respectively. The weight of the fabric is 225 g per m² and the fabric thickness is 0.36 mm.
When the base fabric is tensioned, its length increases by approximately 1.9%, while the width decreases by approximately 4.4% and the thickness of the fabric increases to 0.43 mm.
The initial dip coating steps serve to apply a bonding layer 24 to the base fabric 21, the mixture being simply a bonding material of polytetrafluoroethylene. In the initial leak coating step, which forms a coating layer 25a on the carrier side of the base fabric, and in the remaining dip coating steps, which apply coating material to both sides of the fabric, that is, in the fabric filling steps, which form the coating layers 25 and 26 on the respective sides of the fabric, the mixture also contains silicate bodies, typically solid glass beads with a diameter between 53 and 105 µm, but preferably the glass beads are of a uniform size of about 90 µm. Indeed, it is believed that the use of uniformly sized beads provides improved fabric filling, compared to the use of beads of randomly distributed sizes in a range of diameters. Typically, the silicate bodies are present in the relevant coating layers in equal weight proportions to the dried/sintered polytetrafluoroethylene coating material. Through the final coating layer, a top coating 27 of polytetrafluoroethylene containing metallic particles/flakes is applied. An additional, final fabric coating step will also typically be employed, notwithstanding that such an additional step is not shown in Figure 1.
Die endgultige Dicke des beschichteten Bands beträgt 0,69 mm.Thus, the binding layer 24 consists of two layers on each side of the tape, resulting in a total coating weight of 250 g per m², whereas the fabric filling layers 25 and 26, which each have three coating layers and two coating layers have a total weight of 400 g per m². The final or top coatings 27, each comprising two layers, have a total weight of 100 g per m². The final thickness of the coated tape is 0.69 mm.
The fabric is shown schematically in Fig. 2, from which it can be seen that the bonding layers, which improve the adhesion of the subsequent coating layers to the base fabric, penetrate the surface of the multi-fiber yarns and bridge the small gaps in the fabric, and that the glass beads serve to fill the recesses present in and defined by the bonding layers, thereby giving the tape, particularly on its carrier side, a substantially flat outer surface, the upper coating having a noticeably constant thickness and thus having a surface shape which is of similar properties to the surface formed by the fabric filler layer. It is of course understood that the tape is calendered after coating.
The invention is not limited to the details of the above-described embodiment, since alternatives are readily apparent to those skilled in the art. Thus, for example, the binding layers can be omitted in some cases, even if they contribute to improving the adhesion between the fabric filling layers and the base fabric.
The number of fabric filling layers can be varied depending on specific requirements and more than one such layer can be applied by lick coating. The solids content in the polytetrafluoroethylene dispersion can be other than 50%. In fact, even an increased solids content, for example 70%, is desirable as this reduces the tendency of the coating to contour the structure of the fabric. The increased solids content also facilitates filling of the fabric and drying/sintering of the PTFE, and gives beneficial effects in terms of thermal Properties of the tape when in use.
Other fabric structures and other yarns, for example glass yarns, can of course be used and the PTFE coating material can also contain additives suitable for achieving the required properties of the belt depending on its intended final use. For example, it may prove appropriate to use metallized beads either in the fabric fill layers and/or in the top coating, thus eliminating the need to provide metallic particles/flakes in the top coating.
