Description
The present invention relates to devices for hygienically supporting the skull and cervical spine of a person, including personal safety devices for vehicles and in particular to devices for preventing injuries due to the whiplash effect.
Whiplash injuries are caused by the rapid acceleration of a person's skull and cervical spine, such as can occur in a motor vehicle collision. The rapid acceleration causes the cervical spine to stretch and bend, which in turn can cause a significant injury. Types of whiplash injuries include fractured and/or displaced vertebrae, torn ligaments (both in front of and behind the spine), and tearing of portions of the vertebrae, ligaments, and intervertebral discs.
It has been found that the D4, C5 and C6 cervical vertebrae and the ligaments adjacent to the vertebrae are most frequently exposed to injuries due to the whiplash effect, although the entire cervical spine may be affected. Rapid overextensions of the cervical spine can stretch the anterior longitudinal ligament, putting it under tension and causing either a bone or ligament injury. Such overextension typically injures the C1 - C7 cervical vertebrae. The vertebral artery, which passes through an opening in the vertebrae, and the autonomic nervous system that surrounds the arteries are also commonly injured. These types of injuries cause serious disability and in some cases death.
Seat backs and/or head restraints in automobiles, trucks, and other types of vehicles are designed to prevent whiplash injuries to occupants during collisions, but typically fail. During a rear-end collision, the collision forces typically cause a rapid acceleration of the skull and cervical spine of an occupant rearward in the vehicle. Once the skull strikes the seat back or head restraint, it is then rapidly accelerated in the opposite direction toward the front of the vehicle. The rearward acceleration of the skull and resulting collision with the seat back or head restraint causes hyperextension of the cervical spine, typically injuring the anterior structure of an occupant's neck. The forward acceleration of the skull, on the other hand, causes hyperextension of the cervical spine, typically injuring the posterior structure of the neck.
Another problem with known seat backs and/or head restraints is that the surface designed to accommodate the movement of a person's head and neck is typically flat or does not conform to their rear contour. Therefore, during a rear end collision, the rear of the skull is typically the first part of an occupant's body to strike the seat back or head restraint. However, the cervical spine, which is located lower relative to the rear of the skull, continues to move against the head restraint. Therefore, the cervical spine is caused to move relative to the skull, which in turn causes a serious vertebral injury.
Also, the upper surfaces of many known head restraints are at about the same height as or below the level of an occupant's ears, which is usually about the center of gravity of the head. When an occupant's skull is pressed against such a head restraint during a collision, it often slides upward over the top edge of the head restraint. Therefore, the skull is stretched upward relative to the cervical spine, typically causing further vertebral injury.
The headrest is provided with a continuously variable vacuum cushion that can be individually adapted to the curvature of the cervical spine of the seat user by means of an extraction pump and at least one valve.
The present invention is therefore based on the object of overcoming the problems and disadvantages of known devices such as vehicle headrests and backrests for preventing the whiplash effect.
According to the present invention, a device having the features of claim 1 is provided.
The device of the present invention also has a support member connected to the frame and supported on the seat. The support member is vertically movable relative to the seat to adjust the position of the device relative to the occupant. Accordingly, the support member can be adjusted to in turn adjust the position of the support surface according to the posterior contour of the skull and cervical spine of an occupant. The frame of the device preferably forms a hollow enclosure and the layer of resilient material consists essentially of a urethane foam molded thereon.
In the device of the present invention, the frame is pivotally supported on the support member and is normally biased toward the front of the seat. Thus, when an occupant's head is forced against the device during a vehicle collision, the rear of an occupant's skull initially contacts the first portion of the support surface and causes the frame to rotate relative to the support member toward the rear of the seat. Thus, the second and third portions of the support surface in turn rotate into contact with the rear of an occupant's skull and cervical spine. The support member of the device preferably has two support legs and a rod extending therebetween. The two support legs are supported on the seat and oriented substantially parallel relative to one another, and the frame is pivotally supported on the rod.
A device of the present invention also has a stop member connected to and projecting upwardly from the rod. A stop plate is connected to the frame and is slidable relative to the stop member. A spring extends between the stop plate and the rod. The spring biases the stop plate to slide relative to the stop member toward the front of the seat, thereby biasing the stop plate and frame against the head of an occupant. The stop plate forms a longitudinal opening extending therethrough and is capable of receiving the stop member therein. The longitudinal opening allows the stop plate to slide toward the front of the seat until a rear wall forming the opening engages the stop member, thereby positioning the device in a downwards position. The longitudinal opening also allows the stop plate to slide towards the back of the seat until a front wall forming the opening rests against the stop element, thus orienting the device in an upright position.
An advantage of the device of the present invention is that since the support surface has a contour that conforms to the posterior contour of the skull and cervical spine of an occupant, the device can substantially simultaneously decelerate the skull and cervical spine during a vehicle collision. Therefore, whiplash injuries that typically occur in such collisions are generally avoided.
Further advantages of the device of the present invention will become apparent in connection with the following detailed description and the associated drawings.

In Figures 1-3, a device according to the invention for preventing injuries caused by the whiplash effect is generally indicated by the reference numeral 10. The device 10 is used as a headrest in a motor vehicle (not shown) and is shown on top of a backrest 12 schematically in broken lines in Figure 1. The device 10 is attached to a support member having two vertical support legs 14 connected by a horizontal rod 15. The vertical support legs 14 are mounted in the backrest 12 and are adjustable to adjust the height of the device 10 relative to the backrest 12 in a known manner.
The device 10 has an inner frame 16 connected to the horizontal bar 15 and the support legs 14. A resilient outer foam layer 18 is molded on the inner frame 16. The foam layer 18 preferably consists essentially of urethane foam typically used to make automobile seat backs. As shown in Fig. 3, the inner frame 16 and the foam layer 18 form a head and neck support surface 20 on the front of the device 10.
The rear contour of the skull and cervical spine of a typical occupant is shown in dashed lines in Fig. 3. As can be seen, the support surface 20 is shaped to conform to the typical rear contour. The support surface therefore has three general regions: a first region 26, a second region 28 and a third region 30. As shown in Fig. 3, the first region 26 is positioned to support approximately the mid-rear region of the occupant's skull; the second region 28 is positioned to contact and support the rear region approximately where the skull meets the cervical spine; and the third region 30 is positioned to contactingly support the rear region of the cervical spine. Since, as shown in Fig. 3, the contour of surface 20 conforms to the posterior contour of the skull and cervical spine, first region 26, second region 28 and third region 30 substantially simultaneously contact and support the respective parts of an occupant's body when moved to contact them.
An advantage of the device 10 is that during a rear impact, when the occupant is forced against the seat back 12, the skull and cervical spine impact the support surface 20 substantially simultaneously. The soft foam layer 18 absorbs the impact force and in turn substantially simultaneously decelerates the skull and cervical spine. Therefore, the device 10 minimizes the risk of whiplash injuries occurring because there is little movement of the cervical spine relative to the skull during the impact.
The frame 16 of the device 10 is shaped to form a hollow enclosure 21 as shown in Fig. 3. The foam layer 18 can therefore be molded directly onto the frame 16 in a known manner, such as by reaction injection molding. The bottom part of the frame 16 is welded to the horizontal bar 15 and the support legs 14 at several welds, typically indicated by the reference numerals 23 in Fig. 1. The device 10 is by Moving the support legs 14 up or down vertically adjustable so that the surface 20 corresponds to the rear contour of the skull and cervical spine of an occupant, as shown in Fig. 3.
The dimensions of surface 20 are based on the dimensions of the skulls and cervical spines of typical occupants. Referring to Fig. 3, it has been determined that dimension A, which is the approximate radius of the rear portion of an occupant's skull, is about 3 inches. Dimension B, which is the approximate distance from the approximate centerline of an occupant's skull to the centerline of the fifth vertebra, is about 5.2 cm (6 inches).
The surface 20 of the device 10 is shaped and sized to substantially conform to the contour of a skull and cervical spine based on these typical occupant dimensions. Although the device 10 does not exactly conform to the contour of every occupant's skull and cervical spine, it substantially conforms to the contour for most occupants. Therefore, it substantially simultaneously decelerates the skull and cervical spine during a vehicle collision and accordingly prevents the occurrence of whiplash-effect injuries.
The dimensions (in inches) used to construct the support surface 20 to conform to the posterior contour of the skull and cervical spine of a typical occupant according to the present invention, as shown in Figure 3, are as follows:
A = (3,0) 7,62 cmA = (3.0) 7.62 cm
B = (6,0) 15,2cmW = (6.0) 15.2cm

Dimension D is the distance from the centerline of the support legs 14 (the X-axis) to the center of radius C. Dimension F is the radius of surface 20 where the second region 28 meets the third region 30. Dimension G is the distance from the centerline of the horizontal bar 15 (the Y-axis) to the center of radius C. Angle H is the angle of a construction line drawn with respect to the Y-axis. Dimension I is the distance from the construction line drawn along angle H to a portion of the second region 28 of surface 20. The dimension J is the transition radius of the portion of the surface 20 where the first region 26 meets the second region 28, and the dimension K is the distance between the centerline of the support legs 14 (the X-axis) and a portion of the first region 26 of the surface 20.
It should be noted that although these dimensions have been determined to be suitable for the embodiment of the device 10 shown, they can be changed within the scope of the present invention. For example, if it is determined that the typical dimensions A and B for a group of occupants are determined differently than above, then the other dimensions of the device 10 will change accordingly. Thus, in accordance with the present invention, the dimensions can be changed by one skilled in the art to ensure that the contour of the surface 20 is adapted to the rear contour of the skull and cervical spine of a typical occupant. In this way, during a vehicle collision, the device 10 can substantially simultaneously impact the skull and decelerate the cervical spine and thus prevent the occurrence of injuries due to the whiplash effect.
In Figures 4-7, another device of an embodiment of the present invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral 110. The device 110 is used as a headrest in a motor vehicle (not shown) and is attached to a support having two vertical support legs 112 connected to each other by a horizontal bar 113. The support legs 112 are supported in a backrest 114 (shown schematically in dashed lines in Figure 5).
The support legs 112 are vertically adjustable to adjust the position of the device 110 relative to the skull and cervical spine of an occupant (as shown in dashed lines in Figures 4 and 6) in a known manner.
The device 110 has an outer foam layer 116 molded onto a housing 118. The foam layer 116 preferably consists essentially of a urethane foam of a type typically used to make head restraints. The foam layer 116 is molded directly onto the housing 118 in a known manner such as by reaction injection molding. The housing 118 is rotatably supported on the horizontal rod 113 and is therefore slidable in the direction indicated by arrows in Fig. 4, as described below.
The device 110 forms a head and neck support surface as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. The support surface 120 is shaped to conform to the rear contour of the skull and cervical spine of a typical occupant as shown in Fig. 6. The support surface 120 has a first contact area 119. As shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the first contact area 115 is arranged and shaped to support the approximately central rear area of the skull of an occupant; the second contact area 117 is arranged and shaped to support the rear area approximately where the skull of the occupant enters the cervical spine, and the third contact region 119 is arranged and shaped to support the rear region of the cervical spine of an occupant.
Therefore, during a vehicle collision, when an occupant's head is thrown rearward against the seat back 114, the first contact area 115, the second contact area 117 and the third contact area 119 of the surface 120 substantially simultaneously decelerate the skull and cervical spine, as described below. Therefore, minimal movement of the skull relative to the cervical spine results and therefore the occurrence of whiplash injuries is generally avoided.
As shown in Fig. 5, the housing 118 has a left frame 122 and a right frame 124. The left and right frames are supported by the horizontal bar 113 and project upwardly therefrom in a direction substantially perpendicular thereto. Each of the frames 122 and 124 has a flange 126 which is rotatably mounted on the horizontal bar 113 by sealed radial ball bearings 128. The housing 118 is therefore rotatable relative to the support legs 112 as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 4.
The housing 118 also has a left enclosure 130, a middle enclosure 132 and a right enclosure 134. The left enclosure 130 and the left side of the middle enclosure 132 are connected to the left frame 122 on each side. The right enclosure 134 and the right side of the middle enclosure 132 are in turn connected to the right frame 134 on each side. The enclosures 130, 132 and 134 are therefore connected to each other to form the closed frame 118. The front of each of the enclosures 130, 132 and 134 is shaped to support the foam layer 116 and form the support surface 120. The support surface 120 is appropriately shaped and sized to conform to the posterior contour of the skull and cervical spine of a typical occupant, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6.
A stop plate 138 is connected to and extends between the left frame 122 and the right frame 124. Each of the frames 122 and 124 has a support plate 140 for supporting the stop plate 138 thereon. The stop plate 138 is connected at each end to the support plates 140 by fasteners 142. A stop 144 is connected to the center of the horizontal rod 113, preferably by welding, and extends upwardly therefrom in a direction substantially perpendicular to the axial direction thereof, as shown in Figs. 4-6. The stop 144 has a button 146 extending upwardly from the top thereof.
As shown in Fig. 7, the button 146 is sized to be received in a longitudinal opening 148 that extends through the central portion of the stop plate 138. The opening 148 is sized so that when the device 110 is rotated rearward against the rear seat 114, the front wall of the opening 138 engages the button 146, thus holding the device 110, as shown in Fig. 6. When the device 110 is allowed to rotate toward the front of the seat back 114, the button 146 slides through the longitudinal opening 148. The button 146, in turn, engages the rear wall of the opening 148, thus holding the device 110 in a downwardly rotated position, as shown in Fig. 4.
A tension spring 150 connects the front of the stop plate 138 and the horizontal rod 113. A sliding ring 152 is fitted at one end to the horizontal rod 113 and is connected at the other end to the tension spring 150. The other end of the tension spring 150 is connected to the front end of the stop plate 138 by a fastener 154. The sliding ring 152 is rotatable relative to the horizontal rod 113 and therefore allows the tension spring 150 and the stop plate 138 to rotate relative to the stop 144. The tension spring 150 normally biases the stop plate 138 into the forward position against the button 146 as shown in Fig. 4. The device 110 is therefore normally maintained in a forwardly rotated position so that the first portion 115 of the support surface is held in contact with or near the rear part of the skull of an occupant, as shown in Fig. 4.
However, in a collision, when an occupant's head is thrown rearward against the backrest 114, the skull first contacts the first portion 115 of the support surface 120, in turn causing the device 110 to rotate rearward against the backrest 114. Thus, the second portion 117 and the third portion 119 of the support surface 120 are each brought into engagement with the respective rear portions of the skull and cervical spine, as shown in Fig. 6. Thus, with both rear portions of the skull and cervical spine engaging the support surface 120, the surface 120 decelerates both parts of the body substantially simultaneously. Therefore, the occurrence of injuries due to the whiplash effect is generally avoided. Then, when an occupant's head moves back toward the front of the vehicle and away from the backrest 114, the tension spring 150 causes the device 110 to rotate toward the front of the backrest 114 and thus follows the occupant's head.
The dimensions of the support surface 120 of the device 110 are determined in the same manner as the dimensions of the support surface 20 described above with reference to Figures 1-3. Accordingly, the dimensions (in inches) used to construct the support surface 120 to conform the posterior contour to the skull and cervical spine of a typical occupant in accordance with the present invention are as follows:
A = (3.0) 7,62 cmA = (3.0) 7.62 cm

Dimension A is, as described above, the approximate radius of the posterior contour of an occupant's skull. Dimension L is the vertical distance between the Y-axis (which intersects the centerline of horizontal bar 113) and the approximate centerline of an occupant's skull. The dimension M is the distance between the centerline of the support legs 112 (the X-axis) and the first region 115 of the surface 120. The dimension N is the distance between the centerline of the horizontal legs 112 (the X-axis) and the centerline of the radius P. The dimension O is the distance between the Y axis and the center of the radius P. The dimension P is the radius of the lower part of the third region 119 of the surface 120. The dimension Q is the transition radius of the lower part of the surface 120 where the second region 117 meets the third region 119.
The dimension R is the distance between a construction line drawn along the angle U and the part of the lower surface of the device 110 that faces the backrest 114. The dimension S is the distance between a construction line drawn along the angle U and a part of the second region 117 of the support surface 120. The dimension T is the transition radius of the part of the surface 120 where the first region 115 meets the second region 117 and the angle U is the angle of the construction line drawn parallel to a part of the second region 117 of the surface 120, as shown in Fig. 6, with respect to the Y-axis.
It should be emphasized that although these dimensions were found to be suitable for the embodiment of the present invention shown, they are The dimensions of the surface 120 may be varied within the scope of the present invention. For example, the typical dimensions of the rear contour of the skull and cervical spine may be different for a particular group of occupants. Thus, these dimensions may be varied within the scope of the present invention to ensure that the contour of the surface 120 matches the rear contour of the skull and cervical spine of each occupant. Therefore, during a vehicle collision, the device 110 can decelerate the skull and cervical spine substantially simultaneously, thus avoiding the occurrence of whiplash-like injuries.
An advantage of the device of the present invention is thus that during a rear collision the support surface simultaneously decelerates the skull and the cervical spine since it is arranged and shaped to match the general contour thereof. Therefore, substantially no movement occurs as in the known backrests and/or headrests relative to the cervical spine. The occurrence of injuries due to the whiplash effect caused by an injury to the cervical spine is therefore generally avoided.
Another advantage of the device of the present invention is that the first contact area of the support surface extends beyond the approximately central rear region of an occupant's skull, as shown in Figures 3 and 6. Therefore, when an occupant's skull strikes the first contact area during a collision, it typically cannot slide upwards over the top edge of the device. Therefore, vertebral injury typically occurring with the known seat backs and/or head restraints caused by the upward extension of the skull relative to the cervical spine is avoided.
