Description
The present invention relates to a device according to the preamble of claim 1. In particular, it relates to such an injection molding machine which has a mold core and mold cavity arrangement which can be moved relative to one another and operates with tight tolerances in order to produce thin-walled articles or containers at high molding speeds.
The relative movement of such molds (fixed cavity and movable core, fixed core and movable cavity, or movable core and movable cavity) occurs along an axis common to the core and cavity. Since the wall thickness of the articles to be manufactured and thus the gap between the core and cavity in the molding position is 0.254 to 0.508 mm (0.010 to 0.020 inches), it is necessary to maintain an exact alignment of the core and cavity along the common axis in order to avoid mold damage that occurs due to improper contact between the core and cavity during the molding cycle.
A known device, over which the present invention represents an improvement, is shown and described in US-A 4 556 377. This patent shows an externally conical mold cavity which cooperates with a ring surrounding a core which has a suitable cone to guide the core into the mold cavity and to maintain alignment.
Although the device of this patent is functional, it was found to be unsuitable for applications where the product wall thickness is on the order of 0.254 to 0.508 mm (0.010 to 0.020 inches).
Furthermore, nothing happens if there is a risk of damaging contact between the core and the mold.
A similar device is shown in US-A 3,647,337. There, a female mold element and a male mold element are shown, both of which are provided with precisely fitting frustoconical common engagement surfaces which are machined very precisely concentrically to the longitudinal axis of the device through the bore. The mold elements are also provided with suitable transfer surfaces which ensure that the male element sits precisely in the female element to achieve a precisely defined mold space therebetween. This invention also shows no way of preventing harmful contact between core and mold.
Accordingly, a primary feature of the present invention is to provide an improved mold structure that prevents mold damage that occurs due to misalignment of the mold core and mold cavity.
Another feature of the invention is the presentation of a method and apparatus for blocking the relative movement between a mold core and a mold cavity when mechanical disturbance threatens.
A further feature of the invention is the presentation of a protection arrangement and a securing method which are particularly applicable to core and mold cavity arrangements with which thin-walled articles are to be formed.
Another feature of the invention is the disclosure of cooperating configurations or surfaces on the core or cavity bodies that are designed and configured to respond to misalignment of the core and cavity before the core and cavity make undesirable and damaging contact during a high speed molding cycle.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a stepped or stepped telescopic arrangement on the outside of a mold core and a mold cavity which have a sliding fit with a clearance in cooperation which is less than the thickness of the wall of a molded article.
For example, the wall thickness of a thin-walled article may be in the range of 0.245 to 0.508 mm (0.010 to 0.020 inches), with the clearance between the telescoping steps, shoulders or landings in the range of 0.1016 mm (0.004 inches) with a tolerance of + or - 0.0508 mm (0.002 inches).
Therefore, the present invention is concerned with shaping the geometry of the other surfaces of the mold core and mold cavity bodies so that a blocking disturbance occurs on the other surfaces of the mold before a damaging overlay on the inner or actual mold surfaces of the mold during the course of a high-speed molding cycle.
The expression "actual mold surface" intends to designate a mold surface on the mold core or the mold cavity which is used for molding an object, and the expression "further surface" intends to designate surfaces other than the actual mold surfaces on the bodies of the mold core and mold cavity.
It is common and practical for mold core and cavity assemblies designed to mold thin-walled articles to include at least one coarse guide or alignment element that operates during the molding cycle, the coarse guide assembly ensuring initial receipt of the core into the cavity (or of the cavity over the core) without interference or improper contact.
The present invention according to the characterizing part of claim 1 provides a fine, more precise guide or alignment element which is suitable for preventing damage and for stopping relative movement between the mold core and the mold cavity when mold damage threatens after the initial occurrence.
The present invention also relates to an improved method for effecting fine guidance.
A further feature of the present invention is the selection of the size of the clearance between the further surfaces to be of a magnitude which is less than the wall thickness of the article, and the design of the telescopic further surfaces to provide an area of possible interference during the stroke, whereby incorrect alignment of the core and of the mold cavity initiates this interference to block further relative movement between the core and the mold cavity and thereby prevent mold damage, particularly interference which causes scratching and damage to the mold during the course of a high speed molding operation.
Further features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
Figur 1 zeigt eine Querschnittsansicht der wesentlichen Teile einer Spritzgießform in der Spritzgießposition;Figure 1 shows a cross-sectional view of the essential parts of an injection mold in the injection molding position;
Figur 2 stellt eine Ansicht ähnlich Figur 1 dar, wobei die Form in Entnahmeposition für den Gegenstand gezeigt ist;Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing the mold in the article removal position;
Figur 3 zeigt die Formanordnung, welche wegen einer falschen Ausrichtung von dem Formkern zu Formhohlraumelementen blockiert ist; undFigure 3 shows the mold assembly blocked due to misalignment of the mold core to mold cavity elements; and
Figure 4 represents a schematic diagram of a unit for stopping the molding cycle when the situation shown in Figure 3 occurs.
According to Figures 1 to 4, the reference number 11 designates a mold space and the reference number 12 a mold core, which can be moved from a molding position for objects, as shown in Figure 1, to a removal position for an object, as shown in Figure 2, in a known and customary reciprocating manner along a defined stroke.
The mold core has an actual mold surface 10 and the mold cavity has an actual mold surface 15.
Independently of the interaction of the actual mold surfaces 10 and 15 of the mold core and mold cavity, which define the shape of an injection-molded object, the core and the cavity are provided with further surfaces which can be pushed into one another or joined into one another and which are identified overall by the reference number 13 on the mold cavity and by the reference number 14 on the mold core.
For the purpose of claiming the invention, the further surface 13 forms a guide surface and the further surface 14 forms a guide element.
The term "thin edge" is intended to mean a thickness of 0.154 to 0.508 mm (0.010 to 0.020 inches) (see dimensioning B in Figure 1). In contrast, the clearance between surfaces 13 and 14 in the mold position of Figure 1 is about 0.1016 mm with a tolerance of + or - 0.0508 mm as indicated by the letter A in Figure 1.
As mentioned above, the present invention relates to a convenient method and apparatus for carrying out the method for preventing mold damage during a high speed molding operation in which articles being molded have a thin wall structure, particularly within the range of wall thickness as specified above.
While many prior art core and cavity assemblies exhibit what may be referred to as gross core/cavity alignment, a need has arisen for an improved fine guide or alignment assembly and method that operates during the course of movement or as the core enters the cavity or the cavity moves over the core to prevent scratching or marring of the mold surfaces during this critical phase of the molding cycle.
Accordingly, as best shown in Figure 3, the further surfaces 13 and 14, which have a clearance less than the thickness of the core of the molded article, as indicated by the letter A in Figure 1, are provided with step, shoulder or heel surfaces 16 and 17, which, when properly aligned, fit into one another as shown in Figure 1.
Should misalignment or skew occur (often the result of improper removal of the articles), the mold halves will move toward each other to the point where mold damage is imminent (contact between the actual mold surfaces 10 and 15). The step 16 of the further surface contacts a guide 18 on the further surface 14 to prevent further mating of the mold halves, as best shown in Figure 3.
Thus, although the coarse alignment elements (not shown) ensure reasonable alignment between the mold cavity and the mold core, sufficient misalignment often remains, which is detected by the fine guides and method of the present invention, to block further progression of the molding cycle and thus prevent serious mold damage.
Of course, the guide 18 and its counter-recess 19 can be extended or modified in height Y (Figure 3) in order to change the point of engagement of steps, landings or shoulder 16, whereby the clearance between the other surfaces 13 and 14 (the dimension A according to Figure 1) and the offset (dimension A according to Figure 1) of the shoulder 16 can be changed individually or in combination (according to various permutations) in order to change the point or area of blocking with respect to the Shape design, the wall thickness of the object, the mold stroke and the specified speed of the mold cycle.
It is also within the scope of the present invention that the guide 18 and the shoulder 16 may be reversed, i.e., that the guide 18 is provided on the cavity body 11 and the shoulder 16 on the core body 12. If an interference or contact occurs on the step 16 indicating misalignment, as shown in Figure 3, one of a number of signals may be initiated to stop the molding cycle by well known means.
For example, an override at stage 16 as shown in Figure 4 in a hydraulically operated molding system would cause a sudden increase in hydraulic pressure. A suitable pressure sensor S in the hydraulic system would immediately activate a switching action to terminate the cycle by stopping the pump P.
It will be appreciated that according to the present invention there is provided a collision preventing device for an injection mold which fully satisfies the objects, modes and advantages described above. Although the invention has been described in connection with specific embodiments thereof, it will be apparent that many alternatives, modifications and variations will be apparent to one skilled in the art upon consideration of the above description. Accordingly, it is intended to embrace all such alternatives, modifications and variations which fall within the spirit and broad scope of the following claims.
