Description
Motor fuel With the increasing demand for fuels for internal combustion engines The available fuel quantities that can be extracted from crude oil are not sufficient. In order to The importance of fuels increases, the raw material of which is coal.
Even so, methanol is one of the flammable liquids that is the most easily are obtained in large quantities from coal or from its gasification products, and according to its volatility could be used as a light fuel, Its use as a fuel has so far only been introduced to a very limited extent. This is mainly due to the fact that liquid methanol has a very low calorific value and the calorific value for methanol vapor per mg compared to liquid hydrocarbons is relatively far lower. The consequence of this is that the performance of the Combustion engines when using methanol compared to other fuels decreases very sharply.
It has now been found that, instead of pure methanol, certain mixtures of methanol and dimethyl ether can be used in internal combustion engines without causing a significant drop in engine performance. Methanol can be converted almost completely into dimethyl ether by catalytic conversion, in particular via aluminum oxide, at temperatures around q.00 ° with yields of 99% of theory, if the methanol is separated off by distillation from the condensate of methanol and water obtained in the catalysis and fed back into catalysis. A conversion to substances other than dimethyl ether and water hardly occurs in the case of methanol, in contrast to the higher alcohols. Dimethyl ether has almost twice the calorific value per kg and per m3 of steam as methanol. Its calorific value is high enough to prevent a significant drop in engine performance. However, dimethyl ether itself has such a strong tendency to knock that it is not possible to achieve a reasonably normal operation with dimethyl ether alone in a normal-compression engine. Mixtures of dimethyl ether with 5 to 45 % methanol, however, have useful compression strengths, and the utilization of the calorific value of the methanol is better than when using pure methanol.
