Man nahm an, daß diese Körperchen bei stärkeren Dimensionen auch ein leichteres Eindringen und Arbeiten der Säure im Gefolge hätte. Dies ist aber nicht der Fall. Die Körperchen, welche als Zusatz zur wirksamen Masse dienen, müssen zwar ein stärkeres Korn haben als die feinpulverigen Bleioxyde, mit denen sie gemischt werden, aber die Dimensionen dieses Zusatzmaterials dürfen im Korn den Durchmesser von 3 mm nicht überschreiten, sonst werden sie bei Benutzung ausgeschieden, wodurch die Haltbarkeit wesentlich vermindert wird. Die besten Resultate werden mit solchen Zusatzkörperchen erzielt, die eine ähnliche Zusammensetzung wie die aus Bleioxyden bestehende Hauptmasse haben, und hierzu eignet sich am meisten Bleicarbonat. Dieses kann nur aus Bleiglätte gewonnen werden, welches bekanntlich begierlich aus der Luft die Kohlensäure aufsaugt und sich dabei .erhärtet. Die Herstellung von Zusatzmasse aus diesem Stoff geschieht am leichtesten auf folgende Weise: Man mischt die Bleiglätte mit destilliertem Wasser und breitet den so erhaltenen Brei in dünnen Schichten auf einer passenden Unterlage aus, setzt diese Masse dann der Luft an geschützten Orten ,etwa zwei bis drei Monate aus und zerkleinert sie dann in der Weise, daß das beim Zerkleinern gebildete mehlartig aussehende Material, das aber Stücke von verschiedenen Größen :enthält, durch ein Sieb gehen läßt, welches nur eine Maschenweite von i bis i, 5 mm hat. Das ausgesiebte gröbere Material muß dann weiter zerkleinert werden.
