Process for producing nitrogen or nitrogen and hydrogen
containing gas mixtures The oxidation of ammonia with oxygen or oxygen
containing gases to generate a protective gas, as it is, for. B. in bright annealing processes
or is used to secure tank farms, this creates difficulties
that the ammonia is very inert towards the oxygen.
Up until now it was believed that it was caused by the combustion of ammonia
Necessary for the purposes at hand to achieve quiet, stable combustion
is to split the ammonia at least partially before combustion, so that in
a sufficient amount of free hydrogen for the gases to be burned
is present, which ensures even combustion. It is already one
A number of proposals have been made known which focus on carrying out this split
' relate. Performing these procedures requires the use of an against
these concentrated gases particularly resistant building material; besides, it is
necessary to monitor the working temperatures very carefully, which then, however
the control range of the facility is not insignificantly affected. `Surprisingly
it has now been found that one can rely on the cleavage of ammonia before its entry into
completely abandon the flame and burn the ammonia in with air
process very easily on nitrogen or nitrogen-hydrogen mixtures
can, if the air is preheated, which is expedient by the heat of combustion
can happen and the combustion takes place in a greatly broadened flame.
Neither the preheating of the air on its own nor the application
a greatly broadened flame by itself without preheating the air leads to -dem
desired result. So it is z. B. not possible, ammonia with preheated air
to burn in a common burner. An experiment carried out in this direction
shows that the flame is constantly breaking off and a continuous combustion on this
Way cannot be entertained. Only through the union of the two measures,
namely the preheating of the air and the use of a strongly broadened flame,
it becomes possible to burn ammonia with air without prior splitting. That at
the well-known combustion of partially thermally cracked ammonia, the non-cracked ammonia
Rest is preheated, offered no indication of the development of the claimed
Procedure, especially since it is still used to preheat the air
one
greatly broadened flame must be added while on preheating
of ammonia can be dispensed with entirely.
To carry out .dieses method you can use the ammonia and .die
preheated air in the opposite direction to an expediently conical
Let the impact plate occur. It is advantageous to use the room in which the combustion
takes place, to be provided with a heat-storing installation.
In
The device shown in the figure and already proposed by the inventor is particularly useful. In the figure, a means a sheet metal jacket, .. which is lined with refractory lining b. The expanded space c is the combustion space. A pipe socket e is attached to the upper cover d with a flange and ends at the upper edge of the combustion chamber c. In the pipe socket e, another pipe is attached concentrically, which is at a small distance from the open end of the nozzle the baffle plate f
wearing. About the one that supports the baffle plate
Tube g - is a tube closed at the bottom
slipped over, the upper edge of which extends to just below the baffle plate and leaves a gap there. The ammonia enters at l through the nozzle e, which is closed at the top; it is deflected by the baffle plate f 'and blown into the combustion chamber. The air enters through the tube g and reaches the lower, closed end of the tube h, which is slipped over from below and in which it rises up to the baffle plate f. - It is deflected by the baffle plate and thus also enters the combustion chamber. The combustion occurs at the edge of the baffle plate, creating a very steady, non-breaking flame. The hot combustion gases wash around the pipe h, thus preheating the combustion air and exiting at i.
