Manufacture of copper with high electrical conductivity
always endeavored to use copper, which is used for the production of objects,
which are traversed by electrical current, such as electrical wires, cast fittings,
To make switching devices, etc., particularly conductive in order to avoid power losses.
Until now, pure copper was considered to be the best conductive material. Oxygen in particular was considered to be
Reduced conductivity, and the oxygen was removed by means of deoxidizing agents.
However, these deoxidizers in turn reduce the conductivity, so that
With such aids, losses in electrical conductivity are always recorded
was. It had been found to be the least harmful according to previous investigations
the lithium and there are data in the literature supporting the proposal
make to use lithium for deoxidation in amounts up to 0.2%, because a
copper treated in this way shows better electrical properties than one with another
Deoxidizing agents added, if not the qualities of pure copper
achieved. From the published tables it could also be concluded that a
increasing reduction of the lithium content in copper slows the conductivity
up to the value of pure copper.
It has now been found that the addition of lithium to copper in such an amount that the end product only contains 0.003 to 0.005 ° 10 not only results in conductivity equivalent to the usual pure copper, but increases the conductivity even further . For example, copper which, according to spectral analysis, still has a lithium content of 0.003 , has a conductivity of up to 60 in the drawn state and even a conductivity of 59 in the cast state only a small excess over what is desired in the end product can be given in order to take account of the burn-up. If, on the other hand, the copper has a certain oxygen content, part of the lithium is consumed for deoxidation purposes, and a corresponding excess must be used from the outset. According to the invention, however, it is always important that the addition of lithium takes place in such an amount that the end product still contains 0.003 to 0.005 ° 1a, because precisely this amount has a maximum value. electrical conductivity can be achieved.
rund 2 °/a Li ist vorteilhaft. Metallisches Lithium
For a better introduction of the lithium into the copper, it is advisable to
not the metal as such, but in the form of a master alloy with a low lithium content
to add to the molten copper; in particular a master alloy with copper
around 2 ° / a Li is advantageous. Metallic lithium
and high proof
Master alloys react with the nitrogen even after a short period of storage
Air, which is not the case with a low-percentage alloy: the presence
but lithium nitride affects the quality of the casting, for example
by the appearance of surface defects.
