Am übergang der Kapillare zu dem weiten Rohr bildet sich eine Flüssigkeitsoberfläche aus, die, wenn das untere Rohr hinlänglich weit ist, nur eine verhältnismäßig schwache Krümmung aufweist und dementsprechend nur eine geringe Zugwirkung ausübt. Bei Flüssigkeiten mit sehr verschiedenen Oberflächenspannungen kann aber gleichwohl diese Wirkung noch so stark sein, daß sie unter Umständen stört.
