Description
Process for the production of whitening agents for enamels. Subject of the invention is a process for the preparation of whitening agents of high Opacity and great purity, which can be used for enamels.
In the manufacture of such whitening agents, one often does the observation that the white has more or less strong discoloration, the due to the simultaneous presence of iron and titanium.
If the starting materials are the same, both elements can already be used in coexist with the original raw material. When using Products made from two or more starting materials can also be one Element present in one component and the other element in the other component be.
The degree of discoloration caused by the iron titanium compounds can be such that the end product produced thereby diminishes considerably in value or even becomes completely unusable.
Attempts have already been made to remove the value-reducing discoloration to subject the raw materials to a digestion process. Apart from this, that this type of treatment has proven to be very ineffective because it so far never a complete removal of the coloring substances, but at most one Reduction in their quantity and only a relatively small reduction in the nuisance can achieve dirty gray to yellow discoloration, the same is also very expensive.
It has now been found that the existing in the starting materials, due to the simultaneous presence of iron and titanium coloring substances It can be rendered harmless by mixing them with a small amount of phosphoric acid or soluble phosphates subjected to an annealing treatment.
The use of phosphoric acid has already been made for its manufacture suggested by white opacifiers, namely to achieve a stronger opacifying effect, d. H. an excretion in the glass flux: However, one goes according to this well-known suggestion of pure products, e.g. B. tin oxide, aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, from, with the endeavor, to convert the starting material in whole or in part into phosphate, which itself, as is known, acts as an opacifier. For the use of raw materials, which, such as B. zirconia, in addition to titanium, at the same time relatively minor Admixtures of iron as an impurity, could then at most with a Increase in the friction effect can be expected, -with regard to such Starting materials have so far been unavoidable and the end products are partly completely That known method was unable to render any discoloration phenomena useless Allow conclusions to be drawn, especially when using titanium oxide or cerium oxide Appear. of yellowness according to another well-known suggestion, too on the way was regarded as surmountable, as additives white oxides polyvalent Elements, especially those of the 3rd, 4th and 5th group of the periodic table, z. B. aluminum oxide, tin oxide, antimony oxide and the like. To use in order to thereby to cover up the unwanted color effects. "Surprisingly, it did has now shown that the effects of the phosphorus compounds cause the discoloration Substances do not need to be covered, but can be rendered harmless, by converting them into uncolored or weakly colored phosphates, which are also resistant to the effects of titanium.
The raw materials for the production are: whitening agents known, containing iron in addition to titanium as relatively minor admixtures Starting materials, such as in particular zirconia, iron still containing small amounts technical titanium oxide and the like are in question, the one seized by iron Part by rutile formation acts as a coloring impurity, while those such as. B. tin oxide and the like. Suitable phosphorus compounds also come Phosphoric acid water-soluble phosphoric acid salts, such as. B. disodium phosphate, ammonium phosphate o. The like., while certain insoluble phosphates, such as. B. calcium phosphate, proved unsuitable. The amount of phosphorus compounds used depends on the amount of coloring substances present and can be used by the case in case it is easy to determine through experiments. An excess can be beneficial as long as it remains within such limits that the remaining properties of the Product are not adversely affected.
The procedure described can be carried out, for. B. happened in this way that one expediently the starting materials in question in finely ground form with the likewise finely ground phosphorus compound or a mixture of these Compounds mixed and the mixture obtained an annealing process, for. B. at about 90o to 120o ° C, advantageously about 100o to II-oo ° C.
The phosphorus compounds can optionally also be fed in in Form of solutions, e.g. B. aqueous solutions or suspensions. In this However, the case is after the components have been combined in the solution, e.g. B. of phosphoric acid, first of all, bringing the mass into a dry state in a manner known per se required, whereupon the same is heated to the above-mentioned temperatures.
Under certain circumstances, those described in the or in any Mixtures obtained in other ways even without prior annealing treatment for the enamel masses are added.
Example "i. 100 parts of ground zircon sand are mixed with up to io parts Disodium phosphate mixed intimately and then for about 5 hours to about 100 to 100 ° C heated. After cooling, the product is finely ground and used as a whitening agent used by grinding it with the usual offsets.
Example 2 Zoo parts technical titanium oxide contaminated with iron are intimately mixed with up to io parts of ammonium phosphate and heated to about iooo to i heated to 100 ° C.
White opacifiers produced in this way have a beautiful white color and a particularly high gloss.
Before or after the annealing treatment, the z. B. in the described Wise prepared mixtures still add other substances, z. B. those which the properties of the end product in terms of color, strength, ease of grind o. The like. Are able to influence favorably.
Example 3 100 parts of raw zircon sand are mixed with up to 10 parts of sodium phosphate and 5 parts of chalk intimately mixed. The mixture will then last for a longer period of time iooo ° C heated. The product is finely ground and can easily be used as a whitening agent be used.
