Flüssiges Schwefeldioxyd besitzt ein sehr hohes Lösungsvermögen für Nikotin, wie es in der Droge vorliegt, so daß die Entziehung des Nikotins aus dem Tabak sehr schnell und sehr weitgehend erfolgt. Die besondere Eigenart des flüssigen Schwefeldioxyds, in diesem Falle zugleich als Säureanhydrid und als Lösungsmittel zu wirken, macht es überflüssig, weitere Zusätze alkalischer oder saurer Natur zu machen, um das Nikotin aus seiner in der Pflanze bestehenden Bindung in Freiheit zu setzen. Der niedrige Siedepunkt dieses Lösungsmittels gestattet, für den Extraktionsprozeß höhere Temperaturen zu vermeiden, so daß infolgedessen die das Aroma des Tabaks bedingenden Bestandteile weitgehend geschont werden. Außerdem aber läßt sich das Lösungsmittel nach erfolgter Extraktion sehr- leicht und ohne Anwendung höherer Temperaturen aus dein Extraktionsgut wieder entfernen. Die äußere Struktur des Tabaks bleibt unverändert. Das Schwefeldioxyd entzieht dem Tabak außer dem Nikotin nur geringe Mengen anderer Extraktivstoffe. Diese lassen sich dem Tabak nach ..erfolgter Extraktion in an sich bekannter Weise wieder unverändert zusetzen, nachdem das Nikotin dem Extraktrückstand durch Wasser entzogen worden ist.
