Description
Continuous production of nitric acid from nitrogen oxide and oxygen containing gases in the production of higher nitrogen oxides, such as nitrogen dioxide or nitrogen tetroxide, from nitrogen oxide and oxygen-containing gases was the surprising one Observation made that if you mix the gases with sulfuric acid or a sulfuric acid-nitric acid mixture treated, the reaction is significantly accelerated. By absorption These nitrogen oxides accelerate the production of nitric acid. Such a concentration of the. Uses sulfuric acid, that when treated with the nitrogen oxide-containing gases partially nitrous and. Forms nitric acid. Instead of a mixture of sulfuric acid or a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid A mixture of sulfuric acid, nitrosylsulfuric acid and nitric acid can also be used with advantage be used.
Is z. B. a 65- to 70 ° sulfuric acid nitrogen oxide gases exposed, result from the action of the water contained in the sulfuric acid about 6 to 10 ° 10 nitric acid, which remains unchanged when the gases are passed through stays and you actually have a mixture of 65- to 75 ° Joigen sulfuric acid 6 to 10 per cent. Nitric acid is obtained, which accelerates the oxidation of nitrogen oxides acts. If, for example, 75 to 80% sulfuric acid is used, then About 3 to 5 per cent. of nitric acid are formed, and at the same time a Nitrosylsulphuric acid with 1 to 4% N, 0, -content.
In this procedure, the surprising observation was made that the mixture of sulfuric acid nitrous and nitric acid used or formed changes little in its composition during the passage of the nitrogen oxide and oxygen-containing gases when moisture is added to the acid mixture with the gases tea. The mixture of sulfuric acid, nitrosylsulfuric acid and nitric acid takes on the role of an oxygen carrier and leads to the almost instantaneous formation of N02 or N204, and the reaction seems to be based on the following equations: From these equations it can be seen that both sulfuric acid and nitric acid work with the formation of nitrosylic acids and the latter = with the regression of sulfuric acid and nitric acid as oxygen carriers .. and oxidize the "existing nitrogen oxide to @N = O4: ä Passes through .Sulfuric acid-nitric acid mixtures containing nitrogen oxide and oxygen, these emerge from the reaction vessel while assuming a dark yellow to brown color, which is caused by the rapid conversion of the NO to NO or N204. This peculiar behavior clearly shows that one is dealing with a catalytic effect of the sulfuric acid-nitric acid-nitrosyl mixture, which causes the momentary transfer of the oxygen to the nitrogen oxide the oxidation of nitrogen oxide can be used In the present case, therefore, I am not concerned with prior absorption of nitrous gases in sulfuric acid and subsequent denitration, in which the nitrogen oxides can also be obtained in the form of NO , but. In order to achieve a direct, almost instantaneous oxidation of the NO to NO, if the nitrogen tetraxide thus obtained is subjected to aqueous absorption, it is known that% nitric acid and 1/3 nitrogen oxide are obtained from the latter, which is again converted into nitrogen dioxide or nitrogen tetroxide with the above-mentioned acid mixture can be etc. It has been found that it is advantageous to dry the nitrogen oxide-containing gases before treating them with the acid mixture, thus diluting them. the acid mixture is prevented. In this way one is able to convert any large amounts of nitrogen oxide into NO and N, 0 with a given amount of the acid mixture.
It is also possible, by adding salts such as copper, Manganese, iron and similarly acting salts, the reaction rate still increasing accelerate.
Known devices can be used to carry out the method are used, such as towers, absorption vessels and others. However, it was found that you can use absorption vessels and columns with particular advantage, which Able to absorb larger amounts of reaction liquid on their floors, and if so man-the nitrogen oxide-containing gases in the form of bubbles or finely divided by the acid mixture sucks or squeezes.
The present method increases the performance of a The given equipment is significantly increased, or smaller ones can be used for given productions Apparatus find use.
