Die Ester sind daher in vielseitigster Weise verwendbar, wobei die Auswahl im Einzelfalle sich nach den jeweils zu stellenden Anforderungen richtet. Die niedriger siedenden Ester sind flüchtig und haben einen angenehmen, fruchtähnlichen Geruch, während die höher siedenden Ester eine mit steigendem Siedepunkt abnehmende Flüchtigkeit besitzen und nur schwach riechen. Die Ester haben ferner die wertvolle Eigenschaft, nicht hygroskopisch zu sein. Die mit ihnen hergestellten Lösungen von Celluloseestern u. dgl. können weitgehend mit beliebigen anderen Lösungs- oder Verdünnungsmitteln oder mit Mischungen solcher verschnitten werden und liefern klare, geschmeidige Filme.
