darstellen.Process for the production of esterification products Polybasic
Carboxylic acids are often monohydric with polyhydric alcohols, even if they are added
Alcohols have been condensed. The purpose and aim of these measures has always been
to obtain viscous to solid resin-like products that are used as raw materials for paints,
. Impregnating agents, plastic masses, etc. are to be used. Such
However, products have the disadvantage that they usually have a considerable acid number
or, if it is only about i, mostly hard and insoluble resins
represent.
i : i zur Anwendung bringt, außerdem Temperaturen, die wesentlich oberhalb 200°
liegen, vermeidet.
It has now been found that excellent solvents, whitening, gelatinizing and plasticizers for cellulose esters and ethers, for natural resins such as shellac, benzoin, copals, for: plastics based on vinyl or acrylic acid compounds and synthetic resins, such as Aniline resins, urea or phenol-formaldehyde resins are obtained when dibasic carboxylic acids with low molecular weight glycols containing only one primary hydroxyl group are condensed with the addition of monohydric primary alcohols and at least one mole of the glycol per mole of acid and at least one mole of the monohydric primary alcohol, but using both alcohols in an approximately i: i molecular ratio to one another, also avoids temperatures which are substantially above 200 °. The esterification products can be prepared in the presence or absence of a suitable catalyst under normal, elevated or reduced pressure and while passing through an inert gas stream. The products available range from viscous liquids to viscous or balsam-like masses which, as a result of the alcohol component used in excess, have practically no acid number and are soluble in the most common solvents. The esters are well compatible with other substances, such as those used in the processing of paint base materials or molding compounds, and can therefore be used with advantage in the production of paints, films, plastic compounds as solvents, plasticizers, gelling agents and plasticizers, especially in the processing of acetyl cellulose and benzyl cellulose. They draw. compared to known commercially available plasticizers, such as dibutyl phthalate, adipic acid dimethylcyclohexyl ester and tricresyl phosphate, partly due to lower volatility and light sensitivity, partly due to better compatibility with gelulose esters and phenoplastics and also due to oil and petrol resistance.

Example i 58 parts by weight of adipic acid, 304 parts by weight of i, 2-propylene glycol b @ zw. 36o parts by weight of 0.33 utylene glycol, 1 o parts by weight of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol are heated to about 200 ° until the acid number of the esterification mixture has fallen to about one. An excess of 1,2-propylene glycol or tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is in vacuo. distilled off. What remains is a thin, oily liquid with an acid number below i. The reaction product can also be added in larger quantities to acetyl cellulose when preparing a cable lacquer. Example 2 592 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride, 380 parts by weight of i, 2-propylene glycol, 37o parts by weight of n-butanol are heated to about 180.degree. To 200.degree. C. until the original acid number has fallen from 99.5 to about 2. The excess of 1,2-propylene glycol and butanol is now distilled off in vacuo. What remains is a viscous, yellow-colored liquid with an acid number below i. The esterification product is well suited as a plasticizer for a nitrocellulose lacquer.
